1). The first concept is a better integration to chinatown, but it still has a divissional vibe to north/south access.

2). I respect their concept of a bridge/chinese gate-that shows class from our city's perspective; but, the bridge is a fail for it still divides chinatown to downtown.

Here is what my perspective see's...a bridge is needed there as once the RAM is built, this bridge will abate pedestrian traffic at the corner of 97-104ave... I take the first concept but modify it so it is not a carbon copy of the soon to be Walterdale Bridge. How?
a). First, the elevation from the two ends of the bridge should be raised another 1.5m.
b). The platform of the bridge should, somewhat, parallel the suppporting arch. Historical Asian bridges were done that way...
c). Take the one roof of the two bagodas and apply that right at the precipice point- so that would be the peak of where the biker is.
d). The top handrail from the sidewalk should continue above the support arch and meet but not connected to the bagoda roof- the handrail above that arch should also mimmick the dragon movement.

With the raised elevation and the arch or the bridge platform, chinatown is now vissible and connected to downtown- one fluid street.

Fox Towers taps into 104th Street buzz
Development scores points for walkability

Fox Towers signs mark the build site. Construction on the first tower is expected to begin before the end of the year. Tenants should be able to move into their units two years later.

With its promenade, the farmers market, restaurants and shops, 104th Street is one of downtown Edmonton's hippest locations right now. Langham Developments is tapping into 104's vibrancy with its latest project, Fox Towers.

The buzz is already swirling around the two condominium highrises that will sit on the northwest corner of 104th Street and 102nd Avenue. Construction on the first tower, a 142-unit, 28-storey building, will begin at the end of this year with residents taking occupancy in about two years...

Yes cool shots.. I'm surprised by how fast this project seems to be going. Or maybe I'm just getting used to the lengthy projects in the city (ie. federal building, pearl's 'never ending' dig and ug parking)

I stopped by the Pearl today to get a few shots of the construction progress. I also got a shot of the Innovation Centre for Engineering from across the river as well. I believe that the Pearl has just passed the half-way point in terms of floors now. I counted 18 when I was there.

They are repairing the leaky roof of the Central LRT station, along with narrowing Jasper Avenue from 7 lanes to 5 (by removing the dividers that were once there) and widening the sidewalk so it is more pedestrian/storefront/patio friendly.

When finished, to my understanding, the right lane of Jasper Ave will always be transit-orientated lanes at peak hours, and general parking when not. The middle lane will become the regular flow lane, and the left turning lanes will be where the dividers once were. As well, there will be no more left-hand turns on to 109th anymore.

If there is anything good about First and Jasper it is the fact that the ugly concrete wall facing Jasper Ave. has been removed. Aside from that, what a waste.

I never heard anything about them getting rid of the left-turns at Jasper Ave and 109 St. That doesn't even make a whit of sense.

Meet you at the MOE? Advocates push for new Museum of Edmonton

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Monday, September 10, 2012

Edmonton has a great story. It just needs a place to talk about it, says the Edmonton Heritage Council, which is pushing for a new city museum.

Consultants for the heritage council are finishing a strategy for a city museum that could cost an estimated $45 million, and with a draft version in hand, heritage council executive director David Ridley is trying to talk it up...

The only waste was that corner with the old BMO sucking the life out of it.
