This is the view of the new hotel from Freshwater Road. It's not very attractive, obviously. There is, however, a beautiful view of it along Prince Philip Drive, nothing but greenery with the hotel poking out above it all.

Ha, I love that video! I hope he is working on a time-lapse video that covers the entire construction phase.

New Look Proposed for Harbour Drive

Quote:
The St. John's Port Authority has proposed construction of a new fence along Harbour Drive. If approved by council, the fence would replace the existing combination of chain link and aluminum railing. Viewing areas would also be constructed at three locations along the harbourfront, enhancing the walking experience, as well as being more appealing to vessels visiting the harbour. The new fence would be designed with brick pillars and metal fencing.
The cost of the project is estimated at $850,000, and a 50 per cent contribution from the City of St. John's has been requested. Council has already seen some conceptual designs of the new fence and viewing areas and will see additional detail as the design progresses.

YYYEEESSS!!! That's fantastic news.

Harbour Drive really is, for the most part, an eyesore - which is fine, it's industrial, and it's not even our main downtown street. But it would be nice to have it fixed up a little. It feels too much like a back lane of Water Street rather than the very first street in the city.

The Henry Goodrich is docked in Conception Bay. I believe it's here for repairs caused by an incident on-board earlier this week. Just thought I'd throw this tidbit of information out for all the enthusiastic photographers out there.

Apparently you can get some nice views of it from Topsail beach.

I love it. This, MIX Condos, etc... that's the type of development I'd like to see if we're allowing modern buildings in the old town area.

The new design for Star of the Sea condos looks great! I really like the blend of modern and heritage styles; I think it'll fit nicely into this area. I've been wondering why this project was stalled, council approved this development ages ago... I guess now I know why.

Dear God. That's tolerable but awful... like the Henry-Bell Condo Complex. The new design is awesome and uniquely ours, like the MIX Condos.

I didn't realize the council agenda was available online. Here's what is said about the new design.

Quote:
1. 40 Henry Street – Former Star of the Sea property
Subsequent to a previous Heritage Advisory Committee meeting, the developer of the former “Star of the Sea” property has submitted a revised design plan. The Committee met with the developer, Mr. Vahe Kouyoumdjian and reviewed the site plan, floor plans, parking area plans, design concept, elevations and design rationale.

Drawings are on file with the Office of the City Clerk.

The Committee recommends approval of the July 27, 2012 design for the re- development of the former “Star of the Sea” property located at 40 Henry Street. The City's Department of Planning will provide a separate report to Council once all Planning, Engineering, and other staff reviews have been completed.
http://www.stjohns.ca/upload/agendas/145_AgendaSeptember42012.pdf

So approval is recommended which means this will likely be what is built!

+1.

Doesn't have to be fancy to be better. The addition of balconies should improve the economics too.

Re: Star Of The Sea, I think the design is an improvement, especially with balconies added; and the colours of the "row house typology" which seem a better fit with that part of downtown St. John's.

SigHillHiker - The photos are great, you will have a good view of both Fortis and 351 from the Rooms. The pic from Southcott is a never seen before shot. The one of Kenmount Road is also a classic of modern commercialism, also a never seen before one of St. John's.

Oh Kenmount/Freshwater, how I loathe thee (I obviously love my neighborhood)
