Yeah, I love Fredericton and Charlottetown too. They're both very near perfection for a city with their populations. There aren't dozens of buildings and whole neighbourhoods I'd like to bulldoze and start over as in St. John's, Halifax, etc.

Vancouver might have been 10 years ago, but I doubt that's true today. Downtown Toronto's population has exploded since 2000 and will likely surge another 25-30% over the next 5 years. Population growth 2006-2011:

I wouldn't classify all of Trinity-Spadina as 'downtown', but it gives you an idea of the population increase happening in the core. 30,000 new residents moved into the 18.55 km² of Trinity-Spadina between 2006 and 2011, making for a staggering 25.5% increase in population in just five years. (7,802 people/sq km) This figure would be much much higher if one only included the part east of Bathurst Street.

I wish I could find some useful population density information for St. John's.

I can find it for the entire municipality (244.8/km sq), but the city limits encompass massive, undeveloped areas. Not even park lands - just wilderness land claims extending far beyond the urban area.

However, the population density of Mount Pearl - which would certainly be less than St. John's - is 1,542.1/km sq.

So the urban area of St. John's should be somewhere in that neighbourhood but a little denser, I think.

Calgary is really amazing. That skyline is really second to none, Im gonna give props that they love to give Toronto so much competition for the dollars.

Obviously we don't have a pipeline of oil running down Yonge Street, we'll have to find some other way to keep in the game with these guys.

Impossible to know without people agreeing on what constitutes "downtown". The neighbourhood boundaries in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver lead to apples/oranges comparisons.

Switch the boundaries to census tracts, and from there you can check the data for each tract, or you can go to thematic maps and set it to show population density.

And St. John's urban area has 165,346 in 185.55 sqkm, so a density of 891.1/sqkm.
