A few pictures of that new hotel going up on Kenmount Road. When you're driving up Freshwater Road, this hotel is right on the crest at the top of Kenmount Road. So, even though it's not especially tall, it is incredibly prominent.

Only cell phone pictures today - sorry I couldn't get closer shots.

(For anyone not familiar with St. John's, this hotel - and this area of the city - is located at an elevation comparable to the top of Signal Hill.)

Great shots, I didn't realize it was at that high an elevation. It would have been even more prominent and good for visibility and business if it was taller. Also, for anyone unfamiliar with the city - this was part of the old TCH, and with lots of car dealers.

LOTS of car dealers. And a few that have very large, expansive lots blasted into the sides of the hills. Not very attractive.

And lots of new developments. There are many subdivisions in the area now.

The largest is, I assume, Kenmount Terrace and has hundreds of homes running parallel to Kenmount Road, entering onto it via Ladysmith and Great Eastern. Also, the new developments on Mount Carson (Pearlview being the largest, I assume) link built-up areas of Kenmount ALMOST unbroken to the City of Mount Pearl.

Picture St. John's and Mount Pearl as a C of unbroken urban area. This area and these developments are closing it into an O.

I think the top of Kenmount Hill should become a park (that would be at the center of the "O" and would have great views), and will probably have development all around it where the slopes are not too steep.

^ The elevation of Kenmount Hill according to Google maps is 260 m or about 850 ft. Someone somewhere decided that mountains have to be 1000 ft.

Here it is called Mount Ken, not sure about the elevation figures given though, the map shows it at 260 m, and official topo maps show it at 850 ft..

Urban Forest Committee Wants More Trees

Quote:
The City of St. John's Urban Forest Committee, formerly the Tree Committee, is continuing its mandate to put into effect regulations for tree retention and implementation in the capital's new development areas. Councillor At Large and Committee member, Sheilagh O'Leary, says they are in the final stages of their effort.

She explains they have talked with affiliated groups within council and are very near to bring to the planning department the amendments that will make up the new regulations.

O'Leary adds it is not just an issue of beautification but one that has broader implications.

O'Leary says it is also a very important environmental issue that deals with flood prevention and water retention.

The City of St. John's is looking for the most beautiful tree in the capital city. To celebrate National Tree Day the City of St. John's National Tree Day Committee will be holding a photo contest to find the most beautiful tree. The deadline for submissions is September 10th, with prizes for the winner.

Correcting my statement - Mt. Ken actually refers to the elevation on the North side of Kenmount Road between St.John's and Paradise, and not Kenmount Hill, (somewhat confusing).

The weekend telegram had a posting looking for a representative for this committee. Requirements were simply that you had to be between 19 and 34 years old I believe. Looking for someone of that generation.

Someone also mentioned... I forget who (sorry!) that he believed the new fascade will resemble that dark grey building immediately to the left of the TD Building.

I can't wait to see it finished.

(EDIT: Oh yeah, and the zoom is pretty good! It goes from 75 to 300 mm.)
It looks like it is being clad in Alpolic panels, which are an aluminium exterior paneling, not brick between the floors.

I've been trying to figure this out. It looks like real brick, but I haven't actually seen any brick being laid. Will keep my eye out none the less

TD Place

Re: TD Place recladding:

I found this from council minutes, June 20th, 2011

Quote:
The new cladding is a composite metal panel and though the final color has not been confirmed, the developer hopes to choose something similar to what is illustrated in the drawing which is a muted beige color. The new cladding will also be energy efficient.

It's possible that they are doing the lower portion of the building in a different material or colour.

Maybe they will use some materials similar to their retrofit of the fortis building across the road?

It's the same stuff - although probably a different colour - that was installed on a building expansion here in Saint John (the photo shows some panels with and without the protective wrap)

Thanks for posting a pic kwago. The installation of Alpolic panels has been ongoing for a few days now. I noticed this morning that the protective wrap is off a couple of panels just to the left of your posted picture, looks to be the muted beige color referenced by Architype above.
