This is actually a really interesting conversation about The Roost. Personally, I have really awesome memories of the place even though I wasn't there often. The history is definitely fascinating.

I guess the issue with the new cafe really comes down to the new owner's intentions in choosing a name like that and deciding to make it obvious in the sign.

I'm also confused as to who you're referring to when you mention the 'original owner' of the Roost, as Dow passed away years ago now.
As a former club goer in my younger days- Roost, Flashback, B&S, Reebar, Club 109, and the Dance Factory (all gay/underground establishments)- i'm all offended by this... Lets see,
1.Roost=Roast;
2.Roost's symbol is a rooster = Roast's symbol is a rooster
-both symbol look identical

Sad and pathetic at their lack of respect for history- even with former staffs working there. As well, there is no complaints from the Roost party is due to the fact both Jim & Dal- whom were very close friends with me- have passed away a couple years ago.

On an off topic, anyone else, aside from me, like the color of the tempory divided lines from 99-102 & Jasper. I noticed how vissible, bold and stiking as you drive down that stretch... It also looked quite warm, sexy, cosmopolitan and unique. I would love that right down Jasper, and the rest of the city

Affordable housing set to rise on cleanup site

Michael Gregory
Edmonton Journal

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

A formerly contaminated site is being cleaned up and developed as an affordable central housing complex.

Construction started recently on the four-storey, $6.2-million apartment building owned by Capital Region Housing Corporation, or CRHC, and located on 90th Street near Norwood Boulevard.

The top three storeys will house 23 one-bedroom suites, three of them barrier-free. The ground level will be used exclusively as commercial space ...

^ glad that they accepted the reccomendation to incorporate ground floor ammenity space into the complex. That stretch of 112th is a bit of a dead zone... being so close to Little Italy and the Gorretti Centre maybe a little cafe or something could go in there.

But holy crap, why does the CRHC keep using Alsopp ? How did it get through EDC ?? Apalling!!

Glad to see we're not all just shills for the development industry here

Devyn's father is in the development industry. I suspect Devyn will be entering the same path.

Ok guys... enough on this alleged sign/identity infringement of a long dead club.

How about some actual discussion?

Was at the CISC (steel guys) golf tourney yesterday. Sounds like Ultima may be going with steel, but that there is a bit of a premium over concrete so they are re-evaluating which they go with.

That will be a nice addition to 109st.

Also, their 99st/80ave project has some site action.

I am thankful for the sidewalk replacement and paving on 105st from 97ave-Jasper, but they have removed the special Heritage Trail brick at the crossing.

What it used to look like (103st/100ave but identical treatment)

What it now looks like

I will be inquiring with Jane Batty and a few others at the City as to why we lost this nice design feature.

It is likely easier for them to pave over it and then come back and saw cut and remove the area required for the crosswalk.

^ they just repaved that road correct ? When they did the streets on 118th, they removed the old pavers, laid down the asphalt and then wet cut the asphalt to fit in the new pavers, which results in a much cleaner look than trying to re-asphalt around existing pavers

EDIT: I see SHO beat me to it

Yeah, but places like Joeys seem custom-built to attract d-bags.

Steel for a condo tower? Not familiar with that locally (I'll guess they do it in NYC), but would like to understand sound deadening, and what they propose to do with all of the lost air space between the suspended roofs and ceiling decks. Doesn't that impact floor-to-floor project height also?
