...the TSplost defeat knocked some serious nuts out of the tree.

Formerly (somewhat) rational people are acting full-moon crazy on boards all over town; it's worse than when Whitney died.

And Hamster hon, take as many pictures of new Domino's and Nail Salon construction as you want. I'll look at all of them. I may not care too much, but I'll definitely look.

Still not super impressed. It's a nice looking building that utilizes the site well, but not the location well. I don't care how many stinkin lives it might save, if they want to go ON Peachtree, they need to be willing to activate the street there. That area needs it, too (not that retailers will come, but have the bays).

I'm glad parking will be concealed.

This Atlanta Thread is amazingly simplistic and devoid of any real construction news, but I'll do my part to keep pushing it to the top of the "leader board" so we can appear to be a happening place to all those viewers who once knew ATL as Hotlanta.

Truth be told: we're just not that hot anymore... Note: our mayor once compared Atlanta to world cities. Now we're threathened by the likes of Charlotte, NC according to our state and local leaders. WOW

I still love the ATL. I'm just disappointed in our downward spiral.

10th street is really on the up-and-up.

The structure is in place for the GA Tech building on 10th right next to the under-renovation basketball arena. If I recall correctly, it's a gym expansion, possibly for the golf team? This part of 10th street will look a lot nicer once these buildings are finished and their plazas are open.

Hilton/Homewood hotel is still trucking along, and should be finished soon. Unfortunately the east-facing facade is a huge blank wall. But when coming from the west, it helps to create a little bit of a "canyon" along 10th street. There will be streetfront restuarant/retail space fronting 10th.

Also at the NE corner of 10th and Peachtree they've done quite a bit of demolition/renovation on the little building there to put in a high-end neighborhood grocery store. The old covered patio area is completely torn out.

The new mid-block crosswalk on 10th in front of the MARTA Midtown Station will indeed have a rapid flash beacon. So when pedestrians push the button to cross, a rapid flashing yellow light alerts drivers. It's not 100% effective (like a red light would be), but it is much cheaper (about $10,000 to install) and has a high compliance rate from drivers.

The transformation of the old Hotel Midtown into Hyatt Midtown is in full swing. There's scafolding up around most of the building. Street-level restaurant entrance will be added on 10th street.

On top of all of this, the sidewalk improvements so far look really nice. Much wider and with nice granite curbs and faux-brick inlays. They should be installing pedestrian-oriented streetlights and planting trees soon. Construction is proceeding eastward; I can't wait until they fix the sad stretch from Juniper to Piedmont.

This forum is biased towards the wants of single men.

If you are married with kids, living in a good intown neighborhood can offer an embarrassment of riches compared to other cities. If I lived in Chicago or NYC and wanted my kids to play tennis and swim, I would need to work a second job. Here it's practically free. And the schools for Morningside, Midtown, Buckhead, Inman Park aren't good; they are great.

I'm as disappointed with TSPLOST as anyone but not ready to move quite yet.

I can't understand why we continue to compare our fair city to the likes of NYC or Chicago. Those are huge cities with very dense neighborhoods. If we were talking about sporting teams, the banking industry or shopping malls, we'd have a leg to stand on.

Let's lower the bar and compare Atlanta to cities like Dallas, Houston, Washington D.C, and Miami - metro areas that are about the same size in population.

I just want Atlanta to build a rail system that FITS metro Atlanta - not copy D.C., NYC or Chicago. Our rail system should mimic our driving habits - along the interstates that criss-cross this sprawling region. Nearly all of us are accustomed to entering and exiting interstates every day of the week. Our rail system should be next to the interstate as an alternative to driving, IMHO.

In other news, Toby Carr is the governor's new "Transporation Czar". They say he has absolutely no prior experience in either transporation or transit. Go figure...

washington, boston, portland, even toronto are all good models to look up to; speaking of toronto, there's a city with a fairly limited metro (ttc subway seems very comparable to marta, no?) but which achieves ridership numbers many times over ours because it uses streetcars for corridors outside it's main spine. sounds pretty familiar to me, and we were heading in that direction with some of what was planned with the TIA...

Toronto does have a well used system, but it is much more dense that ATL and good feeder streets that are augmented by a grid layout of streets. In addition there is considerable high rise living in the center of town. The Toronto CBD is significantly more developed than ATL. In general the Canadian cities have more people living in high rise buildings.

Porsche will spend an estimated $564,000,000 constructing its 234,000-square-foot headquarters. An additional $2,100,000 will be spent to construct the luxury automobile’s “driving experience and track,”. Porsche originally announced it would only spend an estimated $100 Million on the project.

The luxury automobile manufacture will become the first tenant at the Aerotropolis development neighboring Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The headquarters, at 320 South Central, is slated for completion in 2013.

(minus brookwood/buckhead village of course) streetcars filling in the gaps are the most logical next step in-town, imho.

I agree, streetcar lines on 10th 14th and 17th would make sense; particularly 10th connecting the developing Westside; Buckhead is a special case, but could add much more high and midrise residence. If the new 12th street high rise apt blocks are a success, we might see some movement.
