what a waste... if you were gonna demolish a perfectly fine building downtown instead of building on a parking lot, at least live up to what you said you were gonna build... the "tallest building west of chicago"...

I hope they leave enough space on the lot so they can later build another tower, because this is ridiculous.

This d*mbass newspaper writer just assumed it would be shorter since it is three stories lass than the us bank tower, but he doesn't know that the floor heights tend to be slot taller than the times when us bank was designed, even if the chairman of Korean air said it would be second tallest he is not the architect and he apparently doesn't know that you can have higher floor heights like the previous proposals where a 750 foot building had 45 floors distributing it to 16.66 feet per floor.

ULI report presents a strategy for developing a Union Station District

by Gayle Anderson

Quote:
The Urban Land Institute (ULI) Advisory Services Panel visited Los Angeles in December, sponsored by Metro and the City of Los Angeles planning department, to examine the Union Station study area and to advise the city on what land use and infrastructure investments the city should pursue given the pending master plan for Union Station.

The ULI report is precursor to the development of the Union Station Master Plan. On June 28, the Metro Board of Directors approved Gruen/Grimshaw as the consultant team to develop the master plan, which will be completed in 24 months.

Although the Union Station Master Plan will deal strictly with the actual 40+-acre Union Station site purchased by Metro in April 2011, the ULI report provides a useful inventory of existing conditions and strategic options that will inform Metro’s planning process.

In the big picture, the ULI panel recommends the creation of a transit-oriented development district (TOD) for the 500-acre Union Station study area, aimed at fostering sustainable growth in walkable, urban mixed-use districts centered on transit assets.
The report is an interesting read if you feel so inclined. Definitely a lot of underutilized space around that area ripe for development.

Though its hard not to be exited about getting a new supertall part of me thinks that the height would compete to much with the Bank Tower which crowns the skyline.

Sounds great but its would take bilions to make this project works. There are several things that would have to happen. First of all the 101 would have to be caped to the south as well as the onramp which seperates Union Station to El Pueblo. If the LA River is restored the traintracks and County Jail seperate is from Union Station so the Jail would have to be removed and tracks put underground. I think this would make a good long term goal but its not going to happen in the next 20 years.

Agreed. I think HSR would give some of those ideas momentum, but its definitely at least two or three decades into the future.

I really hope that this Korean Air project doesn't end up being some dull tall box, like the second option from the left. It's a supertall and will carry some sort of iconic status in our skyline so I hope it's a building w character. I wonder why they didn't just use the same design as the original taller tower?

I'll reserved judgement until we get clearer renderings though.

I feel like Option 1 and 3 would be too similar to the Bank tower, I feel like the last 7 designs are more of a unique style and would fit the skyline well.

Count me amongst the fans of the option 1. A little disappointed that we might not be getting a spire, but that could still change by the time the final design is chosen.

I see little to no resemblance to Library Tower. If the old render was any indication, this will probably have a glass exterior.

Options 1 and 3 also don't seem to be flat topped, though the camera angle of this particular photo makes it difficult to see that. In profile, the roof would probably seem to be at a slope. Sort of like the new Two World Trade Center, though not quite as striking.

I was trying to imply the shape, but ah well. If it's full glass, i'll understand and accept it gladly.

Still there is really no resemblance. The US Back Tower is a squared circle whereas this model just has a square base.

With that said, the 5th and 6th are my favorites.

Wow, those are the sort of primitive massing studies done at the very very beginning of a project. Wiltshire Grand looks farther away from reality than I thought. Meh.

I went downtown today. I was incredibly tired, so sorry about the quality of the pictures, but I'm sure they will be at least of some worth.

All the windows are now off.

Some sweet Apex logo action. Love the serif font.

They are cutting out windows on the future Ace Hotel.

And testing different shades of paint.

That building with the name I forget turned out better then expected. No stucco. Minimal, striking yellow highlights. I rather like it.

Here is another angle.

Logo for the restaurant that is replacing Urban Noodle.
