Edmonton housing starts up sharply in June

Housing starts in the Edmonton census metropolitan area went up 46 per cent last month to 1,050 units, up from 719 starts in June 2011.

EDMONTON - Home starts in the Edmonton region soared in June as builders ramp up construction to meet anticipated consumer demand, said the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. Tuesday.

“Strong economic conditions, including higher levels of migration and employment, coupled with declining new home inventory, have prompted builders to increase production in 2012,” said Christina Butchart, senior market analyst for the federal housing agency.

Sadly, I'm uin the same situation. Well, without the panicky - just worried. Workplace is moving to a larger getup and the location is a bit out there.

Key south Edmonton interchange finally on the way


EDMONTON - A major south Edmonton’s interchange that’s a key part of work to make the city a distribution hub is finally being built six years after it was originally announced.

The structure at Highway 2 and 41st Avenue southwest, the city border, is being put up primarily to serve the new CP Rail intermodal yard planned for the east side of the road, transportation general manager Bob Boutilier says.

Great news. Does this mean the CP yard between Gateway and 99 st, and the smaller yard south of Whyte will be removed?
edit: Yes, the yard just north of 34 Ave will be gone. It would be nice if the yard in Strathcona disappeared.

The CP intermodel yard is currently doing earthworks. Another massive project is about to start in that corridor. In five years there will be continuos development between the city and airport.

It's a pretty crazy market out there, for sure. I moved back in April, and I didn't find my place until 2 weeks before I needed to move in. Very stressful time. A few times I'd look at a place and before I could fill out and return the application (3-4 hours later) it was already rented out. Madness out there.

You're either a) paying way too much b) in a very undesirable location or c) in a less than quality building.

Thanks for the tip, very useful. I'm happy to say I have secured a place, a 2 bedroom suite just north of Whyte and west of 99 st. Would have preferred DT, but it will do.

And speaking of Intermodal, CN must be busy as well, they are massively expanding their pad, and they have just taken delivery of another top-loader, for a total of seven. They had five when I started hauling there two years ago.

downtown is nice, but it sounds like you've secured a pretty prime spot. lots of bars and restaurants down Whyte ave., Mill Creek trails, river valley close by....

^ It's pretty epic! I'm excited. I'm about a block from Sask drive, and the river valley, sitting right behind the Cranleigh Towers. Nice yard with a decent sized lawn, koi pond, and a firepit. 5 minute walk to the farmer's market. I think I will cancel my car insurance for now and just park it. Maybe get it going again once the snow flies.

For sure a great location...and the river valley and QE pool there as well. Nice to be off Whyte as well. A brisk walk to downtown is 15-20 minutes. No need for car with the good bus service. Oh and the fire pit...sweet for sure!!

Was on Whyte today...A friend came into town from Perth Australia. He was really impressed. He said one thing to me which Rang true. He found the crowd today very multicultural and diverse. We had a great time eating drinking and watching people. But He and some friends went to whyte last night and he was appalled by the young punks that had no respect for anything lol. His statement was....Did a trailer park just get let out!!!! Two different crowds and dynamics's.

I just spent some time with a group of students from Curtin University in Perth. Edmonton and Perth have a lot in common in terms of economy and demographics.
