I think i read that the DA office is on hold because projections were coming in way over budget.

Different list, same result for Utah when it comes to assessing its business climate.

Thanks to high rankings in the categories of workforce, transportation and the cost of doing business, Utah moved up six spots to finish second this year in CNBC’s sixth annual study of "America’s Top States for Business."

Don't plan on seeing ground broken on the new DA Office anytime soon. The project is over budget and the Republicans on the County Council are not interested in spending more money. They are looking at ways to cut the construction costs. It could be a while.

I can't blame them for being waaay cautious, at least until the national and euro zone economies are on firmer ground. What is happening here in California with Cities falling like dominoes into bankruptcy is a major concern, even frightening.

They're actually not done---the Tivoli is coming down soon (if not right now). The plan all along was to demolish all four buildings but retain for reuse as many important architectural elements as possible from the two southernmost structures, which would be recreated.

Thanks for the clarification Zionide. I had assumed that to be the case.

Really? I don't remember that being the case but maybe I was just assuming. I was pretty sure the Rex was going to be restored, not rebuilt with some of the orginal architectural elements.

Do you have a link to the project or the demolition permits?

Cool design on the new extension of the Capitol Theatre. It reminds me of the exterior of Nordstroms at City Creek. I really like it.

Check out the bottom of the first page:
http://www.slcrda.com/meetingsmin/2012/BOD/021412/7B_StateStExtension.pdf

Only the facades will be restored, and those have to be removed piece by piece before demolition---assuming there are elements of the facade that are removable and salvageable (on the Rex, they don't expect much to be salvageable beneath the ugly Tivoli crap, so they'll be mostly recreating that one).

It's also interesting to note that "Despite the appearance of being comprised of multiple buildings, the development will function as one building..."

Incidentally, they removed the water tower yesterday; it's supposed to be put into storage until it can be put back on the new structure.

How? They show what the building(s) will look like when complete. Simple renderings don't---can't---show a structure's age, or whether it is new construction or rehabbed.

I like the new design with the addition of the lighting. This major expansion of the school will also put Ballet West firmly at a small handful of the very top companies in the nation

I guess as long as they can save the facades then all is well. Other then that these will all be NEW buildings. I just hope the REX facade will look just like what is shown in the rendering.

I really like the Capital Theater addition, it's modern but it harkens in design to the diamond pattern on the face of the original building.

As for the RDA State project, I got a tweet today that linked from the SL Trib article from back in may and it stated the same thing as you did, that the facade will be removed and restored on the new building.

I'm sure had the buildings not been transient housing for the last 20 or so years that there may have been a chance to reuse the buildings, but alas it isn't going to happen. There is a development in Cleveland, that converted several old 3 story buildings into apartments above restaurants and they were able to turn all the buildings into one large apartment development. It was rather unique inside because you could tell when you were walking into a different building, simply by the fact that one section of the second floor was 3-4 feet lower than another area. I am glad that the water tower is going to be included in the new project, and that the two facades will be restored or replicated.

Hey, embarrassed that I have to ask this, but with the La Porte project, will the Rex Theater part of the building be a movie theater again, or will it be office space or residential or something? I honestly can't remember, and I couldn't find the details quickly enough to satisfy me at 6 AM.

Yeah, I like that the diamond/lattice pattern on the front of the Capitol Theater is carried over from the original building--just enough of an homage to let you know they're the same organization, but not trying to mimic the Capitol or pretend that this was built in the early 20th Century. Nice design. And taller than I thought it would be.

The floorplan for the Rex Theater showed a theater or auditorium room in their plans. I'm not sure what type of facility it will turn out to be.

Another small performance space would be ideal, something for the local companies to use, similar to some of the spaces at the Rose Wagner. I am guessing though, that since it is a private firm that will own it, that it will most likely be either a theater or possible some sort of meeting space. I am glad that there will be a theater in it though.
