poor post on my part, it was more to "hoping" that the cmhr would have the greatest effect in north american history

logistics of the city are a problem but at least those who do visit will be spending the night in the city and not just driving home after visiting, i guess that counts for something.

Museum officials acknowledge that funding shortfalls, along with the development of the museum's exhibitions, are among the reasons why they're working towards opening the facility in 2014, a year later than its last estimate.

Officials had originally hoped to open the museum in 2012, but later set a goal of finishing construction in 2012 and opening in 2013.

"We're working towards 2014, we'll be able to confirm that. We're trying to provide people with a bit of a clearer timeline," museum spokesperson Angela Cassie told CBC News on Tuesday.

"Right now, all of our work plans are aligning for an opening in 2014, but that date is contingent on a few factors."

The shell (exterior) of the is slated to be complete in Feb of 2013. The interior is anyone's guess as Viking eluded to.

yasss it reminds me of the hagia sophia inside, for its sheer size and how much natural light there is.

Also the interior will have a lake, granite stones, a garden, etc.

Fair enough Vike, but for $350+ million it damn well should be amazing.

That's actually kind of funny because last night i was leafing through an Apr copy of Azure Magazine (architecture magazine) and it had an article about significant new buildings around the globe and the CMHR had a small write up. There were others as well - Whitney Museum (New York) 19,500 m2 - $729 million, Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg) 120,000 m2 - $358 million, Grand Egyptian Museum (Giza) 100,000 m2 - $550 million, CMHR (Winnipeg) 24,150 m2 - $310 million.

It seems that "Cultural Icons" as the article calls them, are very expensive.

People will love it in the end, you cannot judge it right now , it is still far from even looking what it should be. As for price, I never thought $350M was over the top as I know other buildings around the world of this type cost even more. And the people of this city are just not used to seeing $350M spent on anything.

I was curious about your statement and i was bored over lunch so, in really rough figures - 6 hr driving distance is roughly 400 to 500 miles.

6h from Winnipeg - roughly 7 million or so (3.5 to 4 million in the Minneapolis area alone). I was actually impressed by this number, until......

6h from Milwaukee - roughly 50 million....oh

6h from Bilbao - roughly 85 million.....sheesh, that's a lot

Not very scientific. I just drew a 450 mile circle and counted either the whole or 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 State, Province or Country population from Wikipedia.
