Yeah for sure, I see his point. Another thing is that Calgary has the most corporate skyline of any Canadian city. Toronto will never see really tall office towers built here like they were in the past, due to the hatred of the banking industry, and their profits and cash are monitored very closely by the public at large. So banks will build shorter and less flamboyant skyscrapers in the future, at least in Canada. So our skyline here in T.O. is becoming residential much like Vancouver, not a bad, thing if we keep building, but bad in that it takes away from the variety in colours, height, and size, which we had in the past.

I've always thought Calgary had one of the nicest skylines in the country for pure office density !

But honestly, I hate the Bow ! It just too large, doesn't fit well with the rest of the skyline !

I think it looks better from closer up / street level.

I'm one of the Bow lovers, I will confess. I dunno why I like it. I like how prominent it is perhaps.

Calgary's skyline is one of my favourites, in some ways my favourite in Canada.

I love the south side of Jamieson, but the North side is funny looking and awkward. The Bow is my favorite building in the country, sure it's fat, but it works. I think it will look better when another building is taller, then it won't dominate so completely.

The bow is different from all angles. Soon we will have more skyscrapers and the new buildings have something to measure up to. The bow is freakin' awesome.

Image showing what was demolished in Winnipeg for the parkades and office buildings. It also shows what was saved. To me, the worst was the eatons centre which was the most recent large building to be demolished. Hopefully there are no more demos coming up!!!

sadly those aren't the only large empty lots in Peg's downtown

Oh man Winnipeg is rough when it comes to parking lots, much worse than Calgary imo (though that might also have to do with Calgary having a taller, denser downtown)

But Winnipeg's downtown lots are terribad. Those lots across the Human Rights Museum could have been developed into a Canalta hotel/water park which (thankfully) got turned down. The hope is those lots get turned into something else, or if a hotel must go there or be a part of some development there it is someone other than Canalta...won't exactly fit in the Forks. Maybe outside the Perimeter Highway though. (Coincidently, I was in my Calgary home at the time one of many writing some letters to city council members on the fence to consider something better for that development)

so some lots like that I would rather see stay as lots if they're going to be wasted like that. On the other hand, one of the biggest blight lots across the convention center is going to be developed and the project is going to be one of the largest downtown projects in some time and will include at a few high rises too. That alone will be a huge difference, since that lot is massive across the WCC.

Though I do agree with you on the Eatons centre in the sense it was sad it had to be demolished, it did have to happen to get the MTS Centre and eventually the Jets back. The MTS Centre bring so many more people downtown since there's always something going on there, and makes it so much more active than when the Eaton's centre was there (though that could arguably be also for a myriad of other reasons) but the biggest role it played in getting the Jets back was that parcel of land specifically was what David Thomson owned. As a result, he now co-owns a very busy arena and an NHL franchise so it had to be that land. In that regard I prefer the MTS Centre personally, but I understand those who would rather see the Eatons still standing and an arena built elsewhere downtown (I mean, there are a lot of empty lots!)

It is. It is a gigantic thumbs up! And you know what, until this moment I absolutely hated the HRM but now that I understand its actually a giant thumbs up, signaling Winnipeg's resurgence (its true), I quite like it!
