Very true, I can count 3 towers in the area that are like that right now and they are all sold out, even though some of the tenants hardly ever stay in them. Think of them as cottages for the rich.

Winnipeg construction boom causes worker shortage

A construction boom in Winnipeg has left a shortage of skilled workers in Manitoba.

That has forced the Winnipeg Construction Association to start looking around the world for help.

"Typically, temporary foreign workers would already have the certification from their jurisdiction overseas that can be transferred over," said WCA's Mitch Calvert.

Several big projects are underway in Winnipeg, including the construction of Ikea and Seasons of Tuxedo development, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the new Blue Bombers stadium Investors Group Field.

And many more are in line, including the Plessis Overpass, expansion of the Convention Centre and redevelopment of the old Bombers stadium site.

Calvert says the local industry needs hundreds of skilled workers and local schools can't churn them out fast enough. Even if they could, there is a need for experienced journeymen to apprentice the new workers.

"As new projects come up that number creeps up even further so we definitely need to address it quickly and it's not going to happen through, you know, the school system. It's just not going to be quick enough to get these projects which are already getting underway," he said.

The association has put together a task force to lobby the province to bring in skilled temporary foreign workers.

Interesting. I didn't know those other towers in that area were 1 unit per floor. I'm so used to seeing towers with multiple units per floor that for me it was surprising! Now vid just blew my mind again.

which 3 are they just out of curiosity?

I actually only know of one, One Wellington Crescent, which is 15 floors. It's a pretty ugly building. Not too bad looking inside but definitely not my taste. This new one looks pretty interesting though.

...along with taking the renovation money out of our wallets via concessions, and the fact the only way I can get there during the evening is to either wait 45 minutes for the 78, or an hour PLUS for the 84/86.

Otherwise though, that place could use a little update.

Cinema City to Close July 9 for Major Renovations

Cinema City on McGillivray Boulevard will close on July 9 to make way for an extensive theatre renovation.

Cineplex Entertainment is embarking on a $4.5 million renovation, as announced last fall, which will see the south Winnipeg movie theatre’s 12 existing auditoriums converted to eight traditional auditoriums and three VIP cinemas.

Expected to reopen in the fall, the theatre will be one of the first in Canada to include the latest cinema technology, with larger screens, Dolby digital surround sound, Christie Solaria Series DLP Cinema projectors and RealD 3D technology.

The box office and lobby areas will also receive an overhaul, with concession changes including hot foods, such as burgers, hot dogs and fries. Concessions in the VIP cinema will include specialized offerings, including flatbread pizza, calamari and alcohol. A TCBY frozen yogurt, Pizza Pizza and Outtakes are also part of the addition.

If you look close enough, you can actually make out the Target symbol. My theory must be right cause on the second photo, if you zoom your eyes close enough, the top of the parking it writes "LINE OF TARGET BUILDING ABOVE"

I'm not surprised though since the existing Zeller space is dated, a bit small for Target's needs. The big obvious benefit is that it IS attached to an indoor mall. However, a brand new building with dedicated parking is probably more attractive. The paper just reported that they can "choose" because nothing is signed yet (and the city knows they're just adding more status-quo retail to the area). Besides, I'm sure they want the mall space for stores like H&M... I noted in the retail thread how the new mall retail format seems to be shifting towards larger, grander stores in the mall, e.g. Forever 21.

As much as I'd like to see some mixed-use development, the infrastructure in the area won't support it. There needs to be, has to be some road improvements (turn lanes would do the job), but moreso, residential at this site would need rapid transit service. Unfortunately, this probably won't be happening anytime soon, so we get more retail.

Oh well, its more retail within a 5-minute drive (or 30 minute walk) for me. Guess thats good. Sobeys, London Drugs & T&T are all stores I'd like to see. Some more restaurants (Famous Daves? Five Guys?) Target will be nice... their prices may end up being 'Canadian', but I do like their clothing (just bought several new shirts from them).
