EDMONTON - Edmonton-based Stantec continued its aggressive expansion by announcing Thursday it is acquiring Calgary’s Cimarron Engineering Ltd.
Cimarron is a 290-person engineering consulting company which specializes in oil and gas pipeline systems and station facilities. Its current projects include TransCanada’s Keystone Pipeline between Canada and the U.S. and Enbridge’s Woodland Pipeline in northern Alberta. Cimarron also has a power division that designs medium to high voltage electrical systems for utilities and oil and gas clients
Will those new employees be at their downtown campus, or somewhere in the burbs? It'd be cool if their demand forced a new building up, but I've heard they're quite happy with the existing campus?

Stantec tried before to develop an industrial engineering department. It will be interesting to see how they fare as most of the other major players are true EPCM. Stantec right now seems to only be the "E" for any industrial work it does, so that seems to mean they will have to start procurement and construction management from scratch if they want to compete with the SNC Lavalin's, Fluor, Bantrel, Worley-Parsons/Cosyn, Jacobs etc.
Talk about growing pains that will cause, those major players that have 50 years experience in building those departments don't even fare that well at it.
Devonian will only be able to take a few. Apparently United Nurses are moving in. Most of the new hires are going into the 2 towers. I don't see Stantec building or taking over a new tower any time soon. Don't forget they are a public company so they need to make money for the investors.

Stantec hardly does any CM work. Perhaps that makes them harder to compete for the same work as some of those others (Although if you've ever worked for SNC you know how terrible they are to deal with) But they have their niche...
& I agree, I doubt Stantec is moving any time soon.

Still, one has to wonder if they'll want to consolidate downtown offices at some point. They've got the HQ in Oliver (112 St), office space in the Devonian, office space in Bell (where World Health Club was located) and wherever else.
I don't see Stantec building or taking over a new tower any time soon. Don't forget they are a public company so they need to make money for the investors.
You can make money if you find efficiencies. I suspect we might see something occur in 2015/16 for 2019ish.

Construction Begins on New 12-Storey Hotel in The Quarters Downtown

Mayor Stephen Mandel joined developer Prem Singhmar to celebrate the groundbreaking for a new upscale hotel in The Quarters Downtown.
Located at 96 Street and Jasper Avenue, the 250,000 square foot hotel will be 12 storeys tall and feature 3 levels of underground parking. There will be main floor commercial space for boutiques and restaurants. A conference centre on the second floor will include a restaurant that extends 20 feet above Jasper Avenue and will overlook the river valley. The hotel will include 220 suites on floors 3 to 11 and corporate offices on the top floor.
Various hotel chains are still in discussions with the developer to finalize the franchise and assume the operations of the hotel. Scheduled for completion in spring of 2014, this unique development is part of a series of new projects slated for construction this year.

It will be nice to see that deveopment move forward, It's nice that it will be close to the gridiron building (one of our nicest historical buildings IMO) so it will add something complimentary to the area.
Now waiting for the Jasper Ave river valley walk to be completed from downtown to 82 st, to compliment all the new development in the area

The United Nurses have already moved in to Devonian...its been 3 or 4 months.
