You get what you pay for. Both from the content provider and reader perspective. Media is no longer willing to pay for qualified writers/editors, and we as readers aren't willing to pay for content. Over the past twenty years, there's been a distinct downward spiral to the quality of reporting; but seems to be accepted because information is much more immediate.

I noticed an article on KSL today that used the name "Zion's National Park" in the article and a graphic. I always remember the bank has the $, the park does not.

Has anyone been by Gateway Six lately? If anyone has a chance, please update us with pics of some of the many projects going on around downtown like the Courthouse, Gateway Six, or new Apartment Buildings. Phone pics are great too, and a huge thanks in advance...

Got an e-mail today about the Utah Heritage Foundation's summer tours they're offering; they include three dates that you could go see the interior of the Utah/Pantages Theatre on Main Street.

June 9
July 14
August 11

It's from 10:00 AM - Noon each of those days, and it's free. If you're in the area and haven't seen the interior firsthand, it's really amazing. Worth seeing if you're in the area. Spread the word!

I'd propose a meet and greet of some kind, but I'm bad at organizing. I just like to show up.

I would be up for a meet and greet. I would be able to go for once since I am moving back to the Salt Lake area on the 5th of June. Allowing myself to settle in at the new place the date in July would be best. Jedikermit, I might even drag my nephew along.

Also, with my wife working downtown, I will be visiting her from time to time for lunch and you will be seeing pictures I take while I am there. Its not an SLR camera, just a Samsung WB150F.

SLC Library’s architect won’t be designing Broadway theater

Development » Three city firms picked as finalists for Main Street project.

Moshe Safdie, who put his stamp on downtown Salt Lake City with the design of the showcase Main Library, won’t get the chance to do so again — at least with the proposed Broadway-style theater.

Why does it take soooooooooooooooooo long just to pick a finalist? I mean this whole boardway theater proposal has been in the works for at least since 2008 and we are still yet to pick a architect? Then how many more years will it take for the architect to come up with the designs and layouts? Then how many more years will it take for the city to approve the designs? ( unless that's what they are doing now with this whole finalist thing. ) Even so this is taking freaking forever. I hope by July maybe we will finally see some final renderings and have a ground breaking date that isn't YEARS away.

The Trib misstated the finalists. They stated that three city firms are the finalists.

The finalists really are the the national firms that the local firms are partnered with: H3Hardy Collaboration, Pfeiffer Partners Architects, and HKS Architects. One of these firms will be the primary designer. The local firm they are partnered with will assist them in more local code and construction issues. THe library was primarily designed by Moshe Safdie, but they had a local firm, VCBO, assist his firm.

The trib article said that proposals are due by June 19th (and that the final could be selected as early as July, although we'll see if that happens). That is less than three weeks (and hopefully they will be public shortly after that date). I'm excited to see them!

I don't mind how long it's taking to get the theater project done; I'd rather they take their time and do it right, than end up with a not-so-thought-through project.

Agreed. I'd much rather they take their time and do it right.

I would like the whole project to be iconic and naturally inviting to passersby. It needs to be something that draws one in and continues to impress the more they see inside.

I want to be proud of the whole project and not feel like they didn't care enough to create something grand. The craftsmanship and architecture should be impressive; a thoughtful blend of natural materials with steel and glass. Using designs and materials that reflect Utah's past with a vision for the future; copper, sandstone, granite, salt flats, etc. Nothing too opulent, but still impressive; small details, great sight lines (inside and out), and every space well thought out.

I could waste hours looking at that. Here are a few highlights from the 10 minutes I just spent:
-Cool to see the airport develop, with the current Terminal 1 showing up between 1958 and 1965. There appears to be a runway under construction in 1958.
-I-15 also starts to make an appearance between 1958 and 1965. That is a major shock when switching between those views.
-The U of U golf course used to be huge! I'd heard that, but never seen it.
-There used to be a baseball field in the middle of Pioneer Park. I'd love to see it back.
-Liberty Park has hardly changed in 50 years. That makes me happy.
-Amazing to see how much farmland was in the valley even in the 70s. I remember that a little bit even as a kid in the 80s when we went to visit our family there, but it's good to be reminded about that history.

I didn't think there was satellite imagery dated as far back as 1958. I never thought I'd see an image of my parents' house being constructed!

Wow, It was very cool to track the transformation of the Highland/Alpine area over the past few decades. Even since the 70's the growth has been amazing.

Fyi, if we somehow we get the go ahead for the 1,000 room convention hotel, it could be as tall as 47 stories! Austin's new 1,000 room convention hotel under construction will be 47 stories.
