I know, right!? When we were discussing the old theatre last week in "The Yardstick" building, I looked up old photos of other buildings on the block and I noticed that the "new" building there had a similar shape as the Auerbach, but I just didn't think it could actually be that building still.

Definitely a great facade under the current version

utahstories.com - Auerbach’s Department store moved from Main Street to 300 South and State Street. Notice the rail lines and wires that would be torn out in the sixties then reintroduced in Trax in the 90s —history has a way of repeating itself.

I wish we could also have The Paris facade restored. It was a very ornate, beautiful front

Much of the old facade of the Tower Theater is still under the current covering. The West Tower had caught fire, and that's what prompted the covering up. The Salt Lake Film Society is actually raising funds to restore it, and to spruce up the interior lobby a bit.
The fundraising is slow, (except during Sundance), so it will take a few years at this rate, but they are doing. In fact, they recently raised money to replace all the seats in the Broadway theaters with seats like you'll find in the megaplexes, and are well on their way to raising funds to convert many of the screens to digital projectors. The Restoration of the Tower will be priority number one after that. If anyone wants to make a donation, contact the Salt Lake Film Society.

I just noticed today Bing has streetview of SLC in high definition.

For example:

That one would have to be recreated because that building is completely gone!

World Trade Center Utah

Well, we now have the World Trade Center Building in downtown SLC. BUt it is not a 40 story building like we all hoped.

Eagle Gate Tower renamed World Trade Center at City Creek

The Eagle Gate Tower has been renamed World Trade Center at City Creek.

The building is located at 60 E. South Temple in downtown Salt Lake City.

“The renaming of Eagle Gate Tower to World Trade Center at City Creek increases our visibility in the global marketplace, enabling us to better serve Utah’s businesses who are seeking to grow their international presence,” said Lew Cramer, World Trade Center Utah’s president and CEO.

The name change is part of a mission to strengthen a public-private partnership.

The Eaglegate Building is about 21 or 22 stories high. I don't know how much of that will take up the WTC space, but maybe one day they will outgrown this building so then they will have to build there own taller building.

Hopefully this will just be the start of the Utah World Trade Center. With increased visibility and an official named home, hopefully the organization will grow faster than it has recently and it will need to expand it's office space in the next few years.

I really like the name, "World Trade Center at City Creek." Not only does it convey a world business presence, but it further cements City Creek as a major destination in Salt Lake City, and Utah.

If there is a need for something larger in the future, maybe the Carls' Jr site gets scrapped and the new home and new tower could be built next to Harmons, keeping the "...at City Creek" moniker.

Wow people on the KSL comment boards are stupid at times. There's lot of post of people saying it was a dumb name change and that they only can think of 9-11 with the name World Trade Center. Do these people even know that there are many other cities across the world who have World Trade Center buildings. Not only NYC.

I know, I too read the comments. What a bunch of babies! They have NO idea what they talking about. I don't get how the name is disrespectful, if anything it honors them.

Guys. Let's be real. We're a bit above the average intelligence level of the world at large (or at least the KSL/Salt Lake Tribune commentariat).

If only everyone could be like us.

I lost precious IQ points reading those comments. Embarrassing at the least.

It's clear KSL and others are adopting the "media standard" of hiring bloggers and sub-standard journalistic "talent" to irresponsibly deliver information to the public to save money and make money.

Prevent high blood pressure: don't read the comments on KSL/SLTribune/DeseretNews...

Here's raising my glass of sparkling apple juice to the rename... May it pave the way for a 40-storey building!

Oh my, what a read... Just goes to show you how misinformed and clueless people in Utah are...

This was my favorite comment...

Is this a joke? There is no way that the utah state government can be this stupid, can they?

Being a native new yorker who was in high school less than 2 miles away from the attacks, this is extremely offensive and disrespectful. World Trade Center, no longer means "a place for world trade." It'd be like naming a new navy base Pearl Harbor II.

Trying to capitalize off the biggest tragedy and loss of life that many of us will ever experience is sleezy to say the least. When I hear the words "World Trade Center" I immediately think of friends and family that were killed that day. Im embarrassed to live in this city. "

Talking about Embarrassing...

If someone cares to pass this on to those blissfully ignorant posters on ksl, be my guest:

http://www.wtcaonline.com/cms_wtca/index...ew=category&layout=blog&id=42&Itemid=264

Of particular interest is the last FAQ:

With the memories of 9/11 still in the public’s mind, what efforts have been made to continue the growth of the WTC brand? What has been the WTC story across the world since then?
The horrific events that unfolded on September 11, 2001 destroyed the physical structures that were the birthplace and the home of the World Trade Centers Association for the first 30 years of its existence, and resulted in the senseless loss of thousands of innocent lives. Instead of retreating from international trade though, the WTCA and global commerce have continued on a path of exponential growth since September 2001. In fact, over 75 cities around the world have carefully evaluated the World Trade Center concept since 2001 and have made the decision to establish a World Trade Center in their communities. They did this to empower and further advantage the businesses that make up their economies to be successful in the global marketplace. They did this as evidence of their commitment to brand themselves as a global city and to make themselves full and viable competitors in the increasingly global marketplace.
WTCA is projecting continued, measured growth in markets such as China, India and Brazil and the application of the WTC concept in cities large and small around the globe in the upcoming years. The future looks very bright for World Trade Centers because more and more companies and communities realize that in order to be relevant and viable in the future, they must compete successfully in international markets. World Trade Centers are proven to serve that growing need based on forty years of success.

When I first read the comments on ksl I was also surprised by their ignorance. However, I think we are being to hard on them. I mean, if I wasn't a skyscraper/ urban development nerd and didn't know anything about the WTCA, I would probably also find the name cheesy. (I don't think I would find it in any way offensive though. When I told my dad about the name he asked if it was in memorial to 9-11)
If I was to comment on a story about agriculture I would probably sound just as ignorant because that is a subject I know nothing about. Granted, I probably would not comment on such a story, because I realize I don't know anything about it. (I say that but maybe you all find my comments ignorant because I don't have an Urban Planning degree.)
