This condo project is going to add a very interesting element to an area of the city that is showing some real signs of coming alive. The whole waterfront / cultural district south of the Disraeli could be a really nice pedestrian friendly area in a few short years, provided that we don't experience a real estate collapse before then.

I for one, am hoping that the Sunstone hotel proposal gets going soon; I've just started a new job here the University that has me (among many other things) organizing workshops and small conferences. Don't get me wrong; there are lots of great venues in this city, but its difficult to find places with nice views, walking areas, etc. Our go-to place is usally Inn at the Forks, but it will sure be refreshing to have another new, fresh downtown option. I guess ALT will be another too.
Some of the participants have high expectations for their venue / dinners / hotels, and I think some of this new stuff coming down the pipes will help.

Sorry if that sounds elite-ist... unfortunately some of the people I have to cater to *are* very elite-ist.

In terms of places in the city that aren't nice to look at, my daily commute to work in the morning has left me extremely surprised and very pleased. Beforehand I had never ventured through West Broadway and I have become extremely surprised at its beauty. I was expecting some really ugly, run down properties - because of its status of poorest neighbourhood in the city -, yet I was reminded of brooklyn for some reason. I love W.B and it, along with Woseley and Broadway-Assiniboine are becoming my favourite neighbourhoods.

As you can see, there is not one area that I am unhappy with in the morning, driving through these neighbourhoods lifts my spirits before work everyday, and just reassures me that I made the right move in coming back here! The only blight is in Woodrow Place, and hopefully as we know that will be remedied by my favourite form of housing!

I completely agree with you. These areas have some of the greatest beauty, character and class in the whole city. These areas of great examples of Winnipeg's 'soul' -- and don't come across cold and soul-less like some of the completely brand-new, rapidly built condo/retail blocks you see in bigger cities. Its much nicer to have an organic feel, a mix of old and new, and a long history of community. I've never regretted buying our home in Wolseley, and a recent visit to the south suburbs for garage sales reminded me just how ugly some of the "brand new" neighborhoods really are. Give 'em 50 years and the trees will come in nice, but will the houses still be worth living in? Quality and workmanship are key things being lost in the race to pump out cheap, deceiving homes (i.e. nice siding on only the front; stucco everywhere else). Kingston Row, Riverview, and South Osborne are other great examples. Heck, I think South Osborne has really changed in the past 5 years since moving here.

This looks like multi use not commercial. Is this a new building or renovation of an existing building. A render would have been nice. I really hope they don't plan on putting up anything like what is in that portfolio. They don't fit in architecturally with the area... Well if built right the third one wouldn't look half bad.

yeah, i'm not sure if any of those are actual renders... the first one is pretty bad regardless. the last two buildings shown are definitely photographs. I'm just confused as to whether they are selling the land + development plans or just looking for investors for the development?

I definitely regret not looking more into the West Broadway area to rent when we moved here... such an awesome area.

i'm starting to wonder if the WCC project will get under construction this year. We're well into the season, and still haven't seen any design. Does the Convention Centre still need anyone to sign off on the design?

neither, they're just selling condo units. the investment bit seems to be throwing you off; its just them advertising the opportunity for say people who want to invest in a potential rental unit. one would still be buying a condo unit either way

Just a comment regarding your concern for it getting on in the construction season - projects of this size aren't really affected by the weather. They start whenever they are ready. Chances are they would like to excavate in the winter anyways.

Who now owns the Union Station now and is getting the money to renovate it?

I remember a number of years ago when the "shopping mall" was in south part of the station, Via had sold it to one of the former owners of the old Winnipeg Jets. For some reason Barry Shenkrov (sic) comes to mind as the one who bought it.

so im assuming that we cant expect any work on the new convention centre expansion til atleast 2013 eh?

also a question regarding the chrm what exactly is the plan for the exterior wall sidings on the museum what material our they gonna use to finish the other outer parts of the walls. Cuz i think thats gonna be huge factor in how visually appealing the bldg will look. Right now with the brown wood finish it looks cheap.

did they put brown wood on the museum or something recently? I don't recall seeing any wood on there except the support stuff for construction
