WestJet and Korean Air to Launch Codeshare Service
by JL

2nd Update 1220GMT 14MAY12

Skyteam member Korean Air starting 31MAY12 will begin codeshare service with WestJet, becoming the 3rd Asian carrier engaging in codeshare partnership with Canadian low-fare/full-service carrier.

Application for the codeshare service was submitted to the US DoT on 03MAY12 and received approval on 07MAY12. Similar application to Canadian Transport Agency was approved on 16APR1

For YEG it will codeshare from LAX and YVR

That should help strengthen the LAX route, however flying through YVR would be the best for timing.

Something tells me that, the hotel is going to be like the original terminal expansion and not be big enough.

Was not able to get a good shot of the new control tower, but it has quite the presence now as well. YEG is beginning to look and feel like a much bigger airport.

Notice on my way out of YEG for Whitehorse yesturday moring that cladding has been installed on the south side of the tower at about the 4th floor. Doesn't look bad.
The Hotel is looking bland. Where is this colour we see on the renderings.

PS flights into Whitehorse this year are increasing, Swiss air is now coming in along with Condor. WJ has put on 2 flights out of YYC to take advantage of the German flights. There are also increasing numers of German tourists flying through YEG to head north.

Keep in mind the Condor and Eidleweiss air charters are pretty much strictly used by German and Swiss tourists going to the Yukon for tour company packages. I'd think the number of "connecting" passengers would be near null. Also I believe the Condor flights also continue onward to Fairbanks Alaska.

Why hello there, superior attitude checking in.

Are the charter flights into Whitehorse even bookable by Canadian citizens? Or are they just sold as part of a tour package by agencies over in Europe?

YYC had the same scenario years ago when both JAL and Korean had charter flights here in the summer, only about 2-3 years ago did Korean open up the summer flights to Canadians to book like a regular flight (perhaps testing the market a little). Other than that one summer it was all pre-booked flights sold only in Japan and Korea to their citizens.

They are bookable to Canadians. I was in Norway last year, and we flew from YEG - LHR and our family from Whitehorse flew on Condor to FRA and then connected to OSL.

I have said it before and will say it again. Edmonton has to market itself and make itself appealing for visitors to want to come here thus more flights. We are supposed to be the gateway to the north and those planes landing in Whitehorse should be landing here as the jumping off point to the North.

Reason the germans come up to WH is the vast wilderness. Yes we should be promoting travel into YK but you would get flights directly into YK from Europe.

Last summer the number of Euro tourist on my flights to YK we quite significant. most heading to the fishing lodges.

First flights to WH start next week. As well Crews passengers start arriving ( Holland America owns the hotel I'm at) by the end of the month. Just not this week, apperently there are 8ft drifts across the road from a snow storm north of Scagway.

If we had a direct conection to Frankfurt I could see the numbers being quite high.

I agree with rocket to a degree. Good proper marketing would imply flights to YEG then offer onward connections to Whitehorse, Yellowkinife etc (both popular in the summer months with Europeans). Yellowknife would be a better a sell as the airport currently cannot handle anything much larger than a 737 at the moment. You could possibly increase loads on the flights (although I hear they are pretty full.)

ANA offered Tokyo-Edmonton Flights as (northern lights charters) some years ago using 747-400's with passengers then connecting onward to Yellowknife.Seems like a great idea if you can catch niches like this.

There was some talk just a couple of years ago that regular charters from China were being seriously considered by a Chinese airline (China Eastern) and a Chinese tour operator but they never materilized....

On a side note it looks like the new WestJet/Thomas Cook partnership will be boosting capacity atleast on the Cancun sector from several Canadian cities including YEG from the number of increase applications put forward to ASUR.I will be interested to see what other sunspots are added and from what cities.

Tuffy any news on the future airport in Tulum? Will ASUR be running this airport? I'm assuming this airport is being built due to interest from many airlines and the Mexican tourism industry. Here's hoping for a YEG-Tulum nonstop in the near future.

The project is moving ahead although there is alot of debate about who will manage the airport. i would say ASUR is the most likely candidate but the details are still be worked on in preperation for another bid.

The area for the airport is already being cleared and will use a single runway and have a single terminal with between 8-12 gates and a few remote stands. Its anticipated it will handle 3 million passengers in its first year of operation and should have very little effect on Cancun International airport.

I can see a large number of Canadian and U.S flights operating to the new airport for those who chose to stay in the Tulum/Akumal south Riviera Maya area resorts. The runway will be able to handle aircraft upto the 747 and will be A380 capable (unlikely to see A380's). The airports enviromental impact is also strongly being put into consideration for both noise and vibration in consideration of the nearby Archiological sites and is rumored that it will have restrictions on certain aircraft types such as the 727 and older generation 737's.
