Well I didn't say it was ugly. Just that it's fake.
I also don't understand the rationale for the cambie design. There isn't a single case of brown or beige brick being executed properly in Vancouver.
Iron and Whyte does look and feel like what an old building should look like... even though it's most likely somewhat value engineered with today's materials. Kudos to the developers for such a rare product and end result.
As for the site adjacent to City Hall... yeah... I'd expect something that'd be higher quality and more of a local landmark... but one that also contemplates the city hall next door instead of taking away the attention from the historic landmark. And yeah I'm not sure if the current design matches that criteria yet.
Heck... given that City Hall is still "a shell" as of present, perhaps some of the funds from this development should contribute to its restoration.
Iron and Whyte turned out very nicely. I am not especially concerned about the white brick and moss because the project is on the north side of the street, so it will get lots of direct sunshine.
I'm surprised that the new portion of the Paris Block does not have weather protection above the retail component. Perhaps it will be mounted later?
The BlySky STIR rental building at 1100 Granville Street turned out very well. It actually reminds me of the sort of the new street-wall midrises that are becoming pretty common here in Toronto.

There was a hertiage home that was propped up a few months ago and the lot cleared for construction of one level underground parkade. Just wondering if anyone has any renderings for this project. It is on the lane on Nicola between Comox and Pendrell.
Same reason that the other smaller retail buildings on Granville (Quicksilver, Urban Outfitters, etc.) are only 2 stories - commercial viability I guess.
Wouldn't it be more economically viable to have residential units above? But I guess that would require a significant portion of the at-grade space devoted to a residential lobby. Still seems like a loss to me.
