looking at one route doesn't spell the picture either. I was quoting from a few years back. DEN is going to be hurt by routes to IAH from YEG in the short term.... I've said that before... not surprised to see the crj200 deployed more on that route.

Not so surprising development concerning Thomas Cook and the Jazz air 757 operation. Looks Like they will be looking for a new source for aircraft come the winter 2012-13 season. See the attached...

Canada's Chorus Aviation has lost a contract to run Thomas Cook flights from Canada three years before the contract ends because Thomas Cook is seeking more operating flexibility.

Under a flight services agreement signed in 2010, Chorus's Jazz Aviation leased a fleet of six Thomas Cook Boeing 757-200 aircraft, and a Jazz crew flew them between Canada and several holiday spots from November to April.

The deal was meant to continue for three more years, but will now wind down by the end of this month.

Thomas Cook performed poorly in 2011, especially in Britain where its core customer base of families with young children has been particularly affected by the economic downturn. The 170-year-old travel group secured a GBP£200 million (USD$317.70 million) rescue package from lenders in November.

"A change in market dynamics means that we need to introduce more flexible flying arrangements; the consequence of that is the decision to discontinue our dedicated fleet of 757 aircraft," Dean Moore, chief executive of Thomas Cook North America, said in a release issued by Chorus.

Chorus, which also operates regional flights for Air Canada under the Air Canada Express brand, said it had reached a settlement with Thomas Cook "regarding the recovery of certain initial start-up costs and forgone revenues," but that precise terms are confidential.

Westjet should purchase/lease the TC 757s (as they are using one for the Hawaii runs)and not only continue the Hawaii flights but look at Eastern Canada to Europe connections which the 757 can handle. May be a good way to get into that part of the business until one day when they may look at 787s?

Agreed the airline in my opinion is well branded and followed enough that it should be able to easily launch and be successful in a transatlantic endeavor. I think with the development of the new regional affiliate it may just be the first steps into developing a stronger domestic market and feed to its hubs and focus points to open up much larger market opportunities. Sunwing airlines is expanding into Europe this spring with the addition of leased 767-300's but those flights will only be offered from Toronto to start.

It's all good if WestJet expands internationally but i hope they do not use Sunwing or Air Transat as a model. Those two airlines maximize seats in their aircraft at the expense of passenger comfort. All you need to do is look at airline reviews.

I think if Westjet goes European, they will try to carve out their own unique model to do so. I could see WJA striking a partnership deal with Iceland express and using Reykjavik as a transfer hub. But then again, there are risks such as the Eyjaweeblefjallwhatajökull volcano.
I imagine that a 737 Next Generation with winglets can get from YEG to KEF

For some of the country that makes sense - for the west the additional fuel costs wouldn't be worth the higher utilization.

Iceland express isn't doing so good... The route to YWG was among several already dropped.

If WestJet were to enter the European market you can bet they would strengthen a relationship with a European partner but it would be one of the bigger flag carriers not associated with AC or That partnership. And for long range aircraft I could imagine the 757-200 or 767-300 as there are a number free to be taken in by the carrier.

Saw that coming. The fair skinned people of Gimli don't fly THAT often. But seriously, YWG is not the best euro-feeder option. Especially via RKV.

Keep your eyes on Dutch airline Arkefly. The carrier has expanded into several former Martinair markets. This summer sees the reintroduction of flights from Amsterdam to Oakland, Los Angeles etc... After a recent discussion with a Arkefly representative stating they were looking into several former MP destinations I would not be surprised to see expansion into the Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton markets possibly in 2013. Martinair has moved away from passenger operations to concentrate on cargo flights.

Considering they have only 10 planes and have 3 787 on order to replace 3 767, I do not see them entering our market.

I just noticed that Westjet now has their AA codeshare flights in their system, I was looking for a flight to PHX and one of the options was YEG-LAX (WJ) and LAX-PHX (American Eagle).

If you modify an existing search, new cities are listed that weren't there before (new codeshare destinations), destinations such as Albuquerque, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Detroit, El Paso, Fresno, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Madison, Nashville, Pensicola, Philly, Raleigh, Reno, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, San Jose, Tuscon and Washington (Dulles and Reagan).

WestJet expands agreement with Thomas Cook Canada

Companies enter into exclusive relationship to provide more capacity to sun destinations
CALGARY, April 18, 2012 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced an expanded and exclusive agreement with Thomas Cook that will see WestJet provide more seat capacity for Thomas Cook's Sunquest vacation product for the 2012-2013 winter season. As an expansion to its successful, two-year, Canada-wide, partnership with Thomas Cook, WestJet will be the only airline providing capacity for Thomas Cook's tour operator arm in the Canadian market.
"We are very pleased to announce this expanded relationship," commented Gregg Saretsky, WestJet President and CEO. "Thomas Cook's decision to fly from the Canadian market with our aircraft speaks to its confidence in what our WestJetters do so well. We look forward to welcoming on board even more Sunquest guests in the near future."
"Known for its quality, reliability and outstanding customer service, WestJet has been a key partner for Sunquest and the wider portfolio of Thomas Cook Canada brands for the last couple of years," said Dean Moore, Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Cook North America. "Building upon an already strong and mutually beneficial partnership, this enhanced relationship provides us with the opportunity to expand our product offering by taking advantage of the significant scale of WestJet's fleet and the breadth of their network. It gives us room to grow, the flexibility we were looking for and further opportunity to provide Sunquest customers with exceptional vacation experiences from start to finish."
"Not only will this improve our fleet utilization, it provides further economic justification for WestJet's fleet growth in the coming years," continued Gregg Saretsky. "We have now made the decision to cover a component of the Thomas Cook seat purchase by extending the leases on three aircraft that were due to be returned in early 2013. Together with three new aircraft deliveries in 2012 and five in 2013, our entire fleet of Boeing Next-Generation 737s creates a unique opportunity for WestJet to serve the capacity needs of the Thomas Cook Canada business in a cost-effective way."
WestJet's 2012-2013 winter schedule will be announced in late July.

^ Sunwing adding a weekly rotation to PVR (flight originates in YVR).

Actually, last summer Canjet had 2 weekly to CUN as well. The Monday flight originated in YVR and the Friday originated in YYC. So no change there.

Also, the YHM route on Westjet is just a return on a seasonal basis. It used to operate year-round up to a couple of years ago and is now a summer only service like last year.
