Edmonton, Jasper Sign Tourism Agreement With Shanghai

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 24, 2012) - Edmonton and Jasper have signed a memorandum of cooperation with Shanghai, China to jointly promote travel between Alberta and Shanghai.

Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel, Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland, and Party Secretary Lin Dou signed on behalf of Edmonton Tourism, Tourism Jasper and the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration recently as part of an Edmonton mission to China (photo attached).

"Having this agreement in place symbolizes the strong partnership between Edmonton and Jasper and, just as importantly, our longstanding relationship with China," says Mandel. "As a capital city, Edmonton offers a lot for our visitors, with a blend of urban sophistication with the outdoors right on our door step."

"With Edmonton as our gateway, a Jasper-Edmonton partnership strengthens Jasper's ability to attract international visitors, including travellers from China," states Ireland. "Visitors find that Jasper affords an unmatched experience, which we look forward to offering to the world."

The agreement is intended to raise awareness of the signatories' cities, and promote cultural exchange and travel between the two countries.

Canada was granted Approved Destination Status by the Chinese government in 2010, which makes it easier for Chinese citizens to visit Canada and for the Canadian tourism industry to market Canada to China.

EDMONTON - First & Jasper continues to attract tenants, even before crews can finish demolition work to make way for the new downtown development.

Public Works and Government Services Canada has leased 41,000 square feet of space over four floors for an undisclosed federal department in the former Epcor tower that anchors the project.

PWGSC.... interesting.

Over 50% I'd gather, given WE takes all of the 2nd level and now seven stories in the tower itself are leased

Likely because it will be less costly than other potential new-ish options out there.

Literally just got back from Jasper, it’s nice to see this tourism marketing moving forward. But Jasper is looking a tad grubby right now. As I walked through town today I noticed a large number of buildings needing some basic sprucing up, others requiring more substantial up keep. Also get rid of all of those 🞵🞵🞵🞵 tourist shops. 7 in a row all selling the same refuse that’s touted as souvenirs.

Impressions from an acquaintance who spent some time in the national parks:

Banff: busy, exciting, luxurious, modern
Jasper: quiet, quaint, stuck in the 70s

Yup. Jasper I prefer, but from a tourist standpoint it desperately needs upgrading.

Ilove the quiet quaint, but the hotel stock 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵.

Need to bump up Jasper and somehow connect it to Edmonton, tourism wise to create a attraction with the ability to draw more tourists.

Can it be a Edmonton/Jasper connection similar to Calgary/Banff?

Probably not as the distances are too great between the two.

Problem is most edmontonians go to banff as there are many other ski options.Jasper needs another resort.

I have lots of family who have been living in Jasper for 15+ years, and their sentiments are the same as what you are all saying... there needs to be a little more glam (for lack of a better word). The problem is the initiative from Parks Canada, and the local population. Funding and permits are a huge part of it too.

Jasper is the only (or very few) city/town which successfully pushed a McDonalds out of their municipality (lease rates on the space were increased to the point it was not financially viable). Not to say a McDonalds is an indicator of success, but it goes to show the protectionism that Jasper holds. This can be monopolized on.

That said, there is now a timmies in the same space McDonalds was, even after much protest from the locals. Personally knowing the owners of a local coffee shop (across the street), they were scared at first, but now I think they are even busier than before . The town could use a few more big names.

Jasper could use:
- A Street front improvement initiative
- Support from local and federal governments for more tourist attraction dollars for park improvements
- A competitor for the JPL. Love the place, but they have a monopoly on the Jasper 4* hotel scene.
- Main Street Improvements (sidewalks and curbs, planters)
- More marketing dollars for their festivals. The music and arts scene in Jasper is unreal. Needs more attention.

Not same space, just down from.... But Funny you mention that though. We were there in march, friends went to Tim horrible, I went across the street, $6 each, I had a fresh breakfast sand and a great espresso versus their meh sand, fried thing and brutal coffee.

The fact I was 5 mins and they were 10 was interesting.

Food for thought

Agreed, but when I mentioned it to one of the staff at JPL, he told me that management has been discussing plans to put an outdoor hot tub as well.

Hopefully he's right.
