I have seen the EDC per-consultation plans, but nothing newer.

Fact is, this is a federal site, and they can do whatever they want, much like the University.

Yea, I was aware that they're not restricted by the city in developing the site, but I was hoping given the fact that they were jumping through all the usual hurdles anyway that the final design would at least be above-par for the area (doesn't take much to be above-par, however, when the entire block contains only 3 sfh's, a duplex, a group home, the city yard, and a whole sea of neglected, vacant, city-owned lots). Realistically, I was hoping to see a building fronting the street with the parking lot hidden behind and some decent landscaping, and anything beyond that would be gravy. Having the parking lot up front on 96 Street is just plain bad design.

I always thought Oil City had expansion plans into that building.
We will be watching this one closely as we do not want another parking lot.

Maclab owns the oil city and the SaveCo building. Personally I really like the save-co, needs some love but is kinda cool.

Agreed. The reason for them doing it the way they are is contaminated soil, and rapid need for construction due to other pressures (RAM). By pushing it back so far, they can start construction while still doing soils remediation.

Still a failure in design I think.

That is extremely disappointing. Omicron is capable of doing good work. With all the decent stuff happening in Boyle St area why are they going to allow a friggin' warehouseto be dropped in that location ?

Expect McCauley Community League to be all over that one. The city owes them a favor or two. I would hop that whatever they do there helps improve the multi use trail

Make sure they build something resembling a building. If it ends up as a parking lot or as an empty fenced off lot a la Arlington, someone needs to burn in the Wildrose Lake of Fire!

Does this factor into John Day's plans for the old apartments on 108th, and the retail fronting Jasper just west of the SaveCo building?

Drove back into town today along for Fort road, looking a hell of a lot better than I remembered it. Going by the old Burns Site and noticed quite a bit of Geotech testing underway. And a lot of stakes in the ground.

Which building is it they are wanting to tear down? To the left of Oil City or to the right?

Ottewell strip mall sold to Vancouver company

BY JOURNAL STAFF, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM APRIL 18, 2012 1:03 PM

EDMONTON - Edmonton’s Ottewell Plaza Shopping Centre has been purchased by Vancouver-based Anthem Properties.

No terms were disclosed in an announcement Wednesday.

The company said it is expanding quickly in Edmonton, with the mall being its third acquisition in the market in the last two years.

The 56,400-square-foot neighbourhood strip mall at 61st Street and 90th Avenue in southeast Edmonton is anchored by an IGA food store, Scotiabank, a drugstore and the Ottewell Liquor Store.

A dry-cleaning business and two unoccupied storefronts in the mall were damaged by fire in March.

Last year, Anthem bought the Millwoods Mainstreet Shopping Centre. Its portfolio also includes North Town Centre and the site of the former Molson Brewery.

Unisource set to open new Edmonton warehouse, office

EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM APRIL 18, 2012 2:04 PM

EDMONTON - Unisource Canada, a supplier of printing, imaging, packaging and maintenance supply products, is opening a new warehouse and office facility in Edmonton.

The 118,000-square-foot full-service building, at 11704 186th St. NW, replaces a 25,000-square-foot facility. For the past 10 years, the latter site received most of its inventory from a larger warehouse in Calgary. The new building is scheduled to open April 30 and be fully functioning by June.

Interesting about Anthem.. their portfolio is primarily strip malls & pad sites but they have a few good projects, good to see an outsider investing in Edmonton.

Also good to see Unisource expanding. I always hated dealing with companies where stuff had to get shipped from Calgary or Vancouver most of the time. Like me, I think a lot of people have trended towards companies that provide better local serivce, meaning that if a lot of companies want to stay in the game nere they need to provide better service. At our CL I just fired our fire safety company because they want to run their Edmonton office out of Calgary and parachute guys up here as required. Sorry Levitt, No ticky no laundry.

Oh, and rumour has it that the old remand centre will be repurposed to house the comm. centre and all logisitical support for all provincial security systems, sherriffs dispatch and the province-wide supernet that connects all emergency systems.

Unless the repurpose comes with some fairly major exterior renos, I say just tear the fucker down. I can find no redeeming features in the building as it is.

/\ What ever the long term plans, I assume it will continue to include some convenience commercial, and, if they want community support, maintaining a grocery store anchor. Realistically, I would bet we see the demolishment of the majority of the site, and larger retail pad integration (shoppers stock form, etc.) before we see a more urbanized redevelopment. But perhaps a hybrid if we are lucky.

I would like to have seen the plans for the Petrolia strip mall redevelopment that was planned before the economic crash. I heard a lot of good things about it, but never saw any renderings.

I have to agree. Jasper ave already has way too many empty lots. If the building goes then something should take it's place very soon after. Although knowing our luck its another speculator that owns the building who has been waiting for a big rich developer to take it off his hands and since it hasn't happened yet it's time to create a much cheaper than a building empty lot for himself.

Is the city allowed to refuse demo permits if there isnt immediate redevelopment plans for the site? or does this create legal issues for the city?

This is getting kind of ridiculous...first arlington, then the lot around the old molson site, and then the taste of ukraine strip. How many fenced off holes with scattered debris do we have to put up with before the process changes. Edmonton is starting to look like it is post war...
