Burano Atrium

Doesn't Shangri-La have one in Vancouver? I know ours does.
Atriums are defined by having multiple floors overlooking into the space, which isn't the case here. Still a great looking podium though, with the skewed glass panes. Now now, need for penis envy here AndrewJM3D.

Off the top of my head, the only atriums I can think of in Toronto are this:

and this:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario headquarters on Bloor also has a nice one, but I can't find any pictures online.

The Eaton Centre atrium also comes to mind.

They are building a commie block village in Laval. Montreal's suburbs continue to outshine their counterparts in the rest of the country.

Who in their right mind would want to live there? Imagine what it will look like in 50 years. The suburbs of Paris come to mind...

Laval continues to uglify itself. Bleh. I mean who came up with these plans?

According to who? I thought you were/are going to school for architecture? Atriums are not defined by multiple floors? I suppose you know better then Lanterra.

A 50-storey glass encased tower designed by internationally renowned architect, Peter Clews of Architects Alliance, Burano reflects the unique artistry of the island of Burano, famous for its vibrant colours and laced art forms. The building features a 4-storey glass atrium which will enclose a specially designed artwork by artist Sandro Martini of Milan. http://lanterradevelopments.com/project/burano/

LOL

Yes most people think Atriums have multiple stories but they don't need to.

In modern architecture, an atrium (plural: atria) is a large open space, often(not always) several stories high and having a glazed roof and/or large windows, often situated within a larger multistory building and often located immediately beyond the main entrance doors. Atria are a popular design feature because they give their buildings "a feeling of space and light." Fire control is an important aspect of contemporary atrium design due to criticism that poorly designed atria could allow fire to spread to a building's upper stories more quickly.

What gets me about those developments is that they offer the worst of both worlds. You don't get a house or a yard, and you don't get shops and services near your home. I suspect these things are planned unthinkingly as auto-oriented sprawl. Maybe they are made worse in some cases by suburban planning requirements like setbacks and minimum parking requirements. I don't think a lot of money would have to be spent to improve on the designs. A lot could be accomplished simply by shuffling the site plans around a bit.

Here's one in Halifax that's under construction (the forest surroundings are a total lie -- this is next to a bunch of other similar buildings and a busy highway). The overall density of the site is probably pretty low because of the huge setbacks, and the blank brick walls at ground level just look strange:

What gets me is how horrid these developments are at the base. Is there not any consideration for decent gardens / landscaping??

I don't think the renderings accurately show the landscaping, although most landscaping for cheap apartment development is ugly. It's standard to have those fake little gate/fence structures with the ridiculous development name and some sad shrubs in front. Looks like the Montreal development's got those covered.

One thing they do when developing forested areas in Halifax is preserve some old trees, but it usually doesn't look quite right because tightly packed trees in a forest do not normally have full growth around them. The silver lining, I guess, is that the hurricanes that come through every 5 years or so bring these trees down anyway.

Very nice. I love seeing nice new renderings for buildings in Halifax as much as I do for St. John's. Is the Clyde street development the one being pursued by WM Fares Group?

Edmonton - Looks like a small cool mixed use glass and steel box is going from proposal to construction. DP approved.

The nice thing about St. John's and Halifax is that they are small enough that developments like this make a big difference.

Yep, it is WM Fares, which is the group that did the Trillium a couple blocks away. There is also a developer Francis Fares who is behind King's Wharf.

Wow, when is the last time Prince George had a new high rise go up?

Yeah man I agree! Must be a good sign of an economic pickup in Northern BC Even though it is hideous, I hope it goes through!

Especially if its in the downtown core

I had the opportunity to sit down with Wadih Fares in February and talk a bit about how a young person can get into Development. A great guy, and I really love the Trillium. I'm happy to hear they have another solid project on the go.
