Although I suppose this could go in the stadium thread, I'll put it here... Currently they are working on the temporary expansion of Taylor Field (Mosaic Stadium) that will last for the next 5 years or so (while they plan and build the new stadium). So far they are prepping the area, but this photo from the riderville website, gives a nice shot of downtown in the distance:

The Riderville site states that they are adding 7,000 temporary seats. As capacity is currently 30,048 does that mean that for the 2012 regular season Mosaic will have 37,048 seats? The Roughriders could challenge for best attendance in the league at that capacity.... if they fill it. There might be some significant average attendance increases in the CFL this year with Investor Field in Winnipeg, a full season at renovated BC Place, and the additions here in Regina.

They also talk about the second phase bringing capacity up to 50,000 then reducing the whole thing to 33,000 after the 2013 Grey Cup which leads me to believe that a few of the new additions are to be kept. Am I reading this right?

^I wonder how many farmers drive in from the region... i'd bet 1/3 of the bums are not from the city proper.

^^ A Roughriders release stated that only 15% of their attendance is dependent on people outside Regina. If that's true, they'd be pulling in about 26,000 by themselves. Since they're always sold out, it's likely higher than that. The new temporary seats will give a clearer picture of how high attendance can really go.

It's quite impressive. They're turning into the Lincoln, Nebraska of Canada. Lincoln has a metropolitan population of 300,000 in a state of 1.8 million and has recorded 300 consecutive sell outs at 81,067 seat Memorial Stadium. Regina at 220,000 in a province of 1.1 million seems to be turning into a similar football mecca.

That said, the Canadian prairie is the nation's football heartland. Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton, and Calgary all have well supported football teams.

The 30,048 capacity number included some stands that were in the end-zones before, these have now been removed and we are back to just the West Grandstand and East stands. The expansion for 2012 will then add 7,000 seats, which I think brings us up to around 33k. I can't remember the exact number. Then for 2013 (Grey Cup year), they are expanding capacity to 50k for the whole season, so yes, for one season we will have a 50k stadium in Regina.

Then following the Grey Cup, the extra Grey Cup seats will be removed, and capacity will go back down to the 33k figure while the new stadium is being constructed... here's a video:

You are including CMA, I was going by city proper, I don't include CMA's when talking city populations with Winnipeg. It has way too small of a CMA to be appropriately used for comparing other cities CMA's.

London City (2011 Census): 366 151
Winnipeg (2012 City Estimates): 700 000

Considering London's CMA includes over 115 000 people and Winnipeg's only includes 70 000 it is safe to say that the city is half the size. Considering I have lived in both cities for a considerable amount of time, I can vouch for that.
