Ivanhoé Cambridge, the real estate subsidiary of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, held a press conference today to announce that it will invest $66M in the Château Frontenac hotel during the next two years. All 618 rooms will be renovated, as well as the restaurants and the main hall. Conference rooms will be extended and a world class spa will be constructed. Work should be over in time for the 2014 winter Carnaval.

Possibly a cool design but I tend not to trust developments with such preliminary renders. It almost seems like they don't want to waste any funds on it until they feel more confident about the proposal moving forward. Hopefully we will see some commercial grade renders of it soon.

I wonder if they will market this to Hipsters seeing as it's in the heart of Hipsterville.

Well, I saw an ad for it in this week's Grid. In fact it was the only condo ad I saw in the Grid.

If it was a hipster only condo, it would be so obscure that we wouldn't even have heard about it

Consider the continually increasing costs of condos, and the static income levels of baristas and bike mechanics, I think not.

Hipster neighbourhoods only stay hipster for so long. Soon enough they'll move onto the next neighbourhood, once this one is not cool anymore.

Roncesvalle is actually kind of hipster now, but it's moving more towards a family Beaches style hood. As for Hipsters having no cash it's not true. They have tons of cash. All you have to do is look at the bars and restaurants they frequent on Ossignton to see you need to be making a decent wage to hang out there all the time. Parkdale is turning into the next Hipster Hotspot. My area Riversid is also going Hipster fast. I've heard the junction is turning hipster as well but I know so very little about that part of the city.

As for "If it was a hipster only condo, it would be so obscure that we wouldn't even have heard about it ", true but we're a bunch of development geeks so nothing gets past us.

Another huge proposal for downtown Edmonton... maybe the best yet

New life to rise from Kelly-Ramsey Block
Bill Mah, Edmonton Journal
Published: Friday, March 30, 2012

Plans are in the works to build a highrise hotel and office building at the site of the Kelly-Ramsey Block in downtown Edmonton, The Journal has learned.
The proposed development is described as 28 storeys high, with the top half being office space. A deal with a hotel for the site is in progress but not yet secured, says a source familiar with the project.

Ronce is a bit too upscale already IMO. Hipsters are already taking over Little Portugal and Brockton as new bars and restaurants open along Dundas even west of Dufferin. To a lesser extend Bloordale and Bloorcourt areas along Bloor (aka: Blansdowne / Blossington). The west end is still where it's at though Leslieville obviously has a thing going on. There's some new hipsterish establishments on Gerrard E near where I live surprisingly enough, though no new bars yet.

Ossington has almost moved past hipster to high end cool. Or whatever you want to call it.

Great for Edmonton, nice to see the Alberta boom finally translating into a big swell of new towers.

Cold what is so special about this one that makes it possibly the best yet (ie better than Manulife 2)?

Manu 2 is sexy, sleek and a new tallest... this is a hotel, office and a bunch of new retail/restaurant space flanking our pedestrian/auto shared street in the middle of the core. Very cool design, if not overplayed in toronto, and would add some needed confidence to the area.

Curious to what the reason was. Supposedly Calgary is getting a Five Star hotel with the city center project. Maybe Starwood felt it wasn't good timing? If that was case seeing a W in Edmonton might seem more realistic.
