The height of the Pearl at 35 storeys far exceeded the height of anything in that area of the city and Council approved it, even with the Oliver Community League speaking out in opposition.

I am surprised that W hasn't opened in Toronto and Vancouver by now. Mind you, Vancouver has the OPUS Hotel which is a similar concept.

Was at the Civic Precinct update this am. Some good progress on visioning and refining some of the opportunities.

Highlights:

-Enhance casual business opportunities around the sq. Temp food/sales
-better way-finding for the area
-greening of surrounding area and the main square as well
-reinvigorate Centennial plaza, remove the bandshell
-make the square more transparent by removing some of the west 'wall'
-more programming
-close 99st from 102ave-city hall parkade and make it the 'spine' of the area from the new RAM to the river valley/jasper avenue
-calm traffic on 100st, make the pedestrian more of a priority
-reconfigure LRT entrances

Speaking of LRT entrances, any plans to match the LRT entrance across from the AGA as originally planned?

If someone can pull it off, kudos, but local developers playing footsie with a hotel chain are a dime a dozen.

They spoke about updating the entrance, but no real mention of matching at this point.

I agree with all of this, esp reducing the size of those bunker-like LRT entrances.

Would add:
- fountain in middle of Churchill Square (would it really get in the way of any events?)
- more statues, sculptures, etc
- reskin/reno of Milner library (any word from you guys @ Isaac on this?)

Airport plan could enhance city's reputation, minister says

Edmonton could become known as a world leader in innovative development by turning the City Centre Airport site into a sustainable com-munity, Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths says.

"We have to look forward in the future to what we're going to build. That means we're going to have to take risks," he said Monday, explaining the province should know where it wants to be in 20 years.

"It may be taking a risk like the City of Edmonton's (plan) to take the airport land and develop it into a renewable, sustainable community. Often, your risk or innovation will be globally renowned."...

but it's not like The Pearl is a 35 storey mammoth in a sea of 10 storey highrises....The Peppertree or whatever it's called is around 20 storeys is it not? and aren't there a few more taller condos to the west of 121st street and Jasper Ave.?

Which btw are beautiful mid-rises and so is serenity although tad too much stucco maybe. Anyways i'd like to suggest these condos to sour tony. Do you really have to be in the heart of dowbtown? If so maybe check out the midrise just at the top of 105 hill. 98 ave i believe? Has a starbucks at the bottom.
