Council kicks in $100,000 for business plan on proposed performing arts centre

EDMONTON - A city council committee recommended Wednesday spending $100,000 to help develop a business plan for building a downtown performing arts centre.

The site should include three theatres with 250 to 1,800 seats, rehearsal and teaching space, restaurants and other attractions to lure people downtown, said Dianne Kipnes, co-chair of the Mayor’s Arts Visioning Committee.

Her idea is a campus on the east side of 101st Street near the Epcor Tower housing multiple structures rather than one big building.

“We want this facility to be used,” she told council’s executive committee, saying there should be amenities such as somewhere to eat that draw people to the complex.

Edmonton Remand Centre may become multicultural facility

"We know the remand centre is going to close in the next 12 months," said Mayor Stephen Mandel. "It could be repurposed. It has a gymnasium. It has office space."

The multicultural centre would be a downtown home for emerging cultural groups in Edmonton.

"I've had a couple tours of the building," said Mandel "It looks a bit discombobulated, but, when you get into it, is quite renovatable."

City staff will inspect the condition of the building and the renovations that would be needed.

we received the info from the developer. Have seen plans for the site, conforms to 118th ave ARP with a few minor variances, standard style Shoppers, parking in back, full glazing on 118, and an interesting suprise on the wall fronting 82 street!

I think we should all work on his campaign!! A great promoter and a REAL doer... and no I have never met him.

No kidding. In the forty years I've lived here, I have never seen a mayor with his vision for the city.

concur.... Despite the fact that I do not agree with everything he's done he is definitely top of the heap as far as big city mayors go.

I have met with him several times, the last time to discuss the Cromdale issue. Always very impressed with his vision, candor and humour

FYI, if I recall correctly Mandel has stated this would be his last (3rd) term. I definately would love to see him in again for a 4th, but he is getting older....65+ I think already.

I just pray a forward-thinking mayor will nestle in the Mayors chair... I'd like to consider Don Iveson.

And...I cross my finger it's not some fool who will recall all the work and plans Mandel and his administration have worked so hard at.

I like Don Iveson, but from my experience he would bring this city to a crashing halt! The way I see it is he's to conservative and paint by the numbers. However, I'm liking Kimmy in the next horse race if Mandel does indeed deside to retire.

^ I agree, Don seems to be too conservative and doesn't want to spend money on anything, we've spent too many years doing nothing. I have always liked Kim and hope she runs for mayor, my vote is for her

Mabdel shares the same vision for the city as a lot of us here have. And you can really see how passionate he is its great to have him as a mayor but will be hard to get a similar replacement. I just hope all the work he's done gets started before he resigns so they cant be cancelled.

Yes I feel the same way. Mandel in the first instance and Kim as backup. I just hope she gets her hair under control - it looked like a rats next on TV last week.
