Using stat's please explain why you think Edmonton doesn't get its fair amount? I think we are just looking at Edmonton, not Edmonton Metro which is almost equal with Calgary in dollar amounts. The probably with Edmonton is that we support a surrounding region that doesn't have to support the city in the same way. Honestly the best way to fix this is by continuing to force the captial region board to work together.

The other sounds like it is proceeding and has secured funding.

MSI funding is based on a formula, 48% population, 48% education tax assessment, 4% #of km of roads (might be provincial highways).

The program was originally designed to replace the promissed by Stelmach transfer of the education tax to the cities. After seeing how inequitable that would be for Edmonton compared to Calgary, plus the difficulty of giving up the revenue room permenantly irrespective of provincial revenues, MSI was created instead.

Easy to forget that Edmonton gets more gas tax money (City Transportation Fund) than Calgary, even though it is smaller in population. You win some, you lose some.

Thanks for posting this. There are so many different and innovative solutions out there.

Glad to see Edmonton get some much-deserved recognition for waste management, but for me it's also a reminder how much more there is to do.

Personally, I love the bike lanes, but be warned, they are controversial. Despite all the talk about Vancouver being a green city, I still know a lot of people who grumble about those lanes every single day.

It'll take a politician and council with some real guts to make them happen.

I suppose the marine life in Vancouver is happy most of the heat energy is removed from sewage before it is dumped untreated into the ocean.

In Toronto I enjoyed using the 'green city' lanes more than bike lanes, which were routinely blocked by traffic, parked vehicles, or really slow bicyclists. The green lanes were buses, taxis, black cars and bikes only. All the drivers in the lane were professionals, and you had the full lane to pass other cyclists or turning vehicles if you wanted.

The lanes in pictures 1,3 and 5 are great examples of lanes done right. I don't like the lanes in 2 and 4 - too much pedestrian and car door interaction. But I am particularly sensitive to being doored.

They are Canada's green city, just didn't expect it to be algae blooms.

If only the city could rezone on a blanket basis to allow such things on selected main streets, then unleash the market!

Right now if you need to change zoning the risk is so high it is not worth it to build small projects.

Isn't that what the city's doing along 109 St south of Whyte?

Is there something in the law preventing the city from doing exactly this?

I remember Toronto staff pitched doing exactly the same thing along Eglinton and a few other streets (I think they called it 'intensive zoning' or something like that) - blanket zoning allowing buildings up to 4 or 6 storeys tall. I don't know what ever became of those grand plans.

blanket zoning is good in some areas, but for this i'd prefer a stretch by stretch zoning plan like 109st
