I'm not basing my opinion on that photo. My own feeling is that they did not plan the project accordingly. It's not enough money to make any kind of difference. They are replacing the lighting with higher quality, re-surfacing portions of the roadway, and adding some street furnishing. I cannot see anywhere, in any of the documentation and in speaking with Brian Van Sickle, that a sense of place is going to be created. There is not going to be any significant change.
So I am clear, I am only referring to Capital Boulevard, not the Leg Grounds. That I believe can and will be a fantastic place. I just think that 108th street can a very grande street given the vista to the legislature and the terminus of the redeveloped grounds. This should be an important urban design project, and from what I can see, they are doing a half assed job. I hope I am wrong, but like I said, I predict nobody will notice and those who will track the progess, will be disappointed.

There will be new seating, public art, additional landscaping and the hope that private partners adjacent will buck up and improve their frontages. Petroleum Plaza is doing this with a very impressive new plaza coming this summer.

So far into the Capital Blvd I feel it looks slightly disappointing as well. But I believe it is way too early to make any real judgement. And redevelopment will need to follow soon after it's complete; especially north of Jasper. Or else it will look really out of place. But I'm thinking some developers should be smart enough to take advantage of this.

Mazatlan is great... security fears very overblown IMO

Not as busy as PV, fun little city to explore, walking around takes me back to my 5 months in the Baja back in '98. The weather is great. Internet connection is shaky and the Pacifico Ballenas are going down like water.

Off to have some tacos then sit on the beach for a bit. Maybe a siesta. So hard to decide.

I'm not sure what everyone was expecting from Capital Blvd, but in my opinion, it will be a vast improvement on what was there before, particularly north of Jasper Ave which, between the half-dead trees entombed in concrete and the cracked, narrow walks, haphazardly patched with bulges of asphalt, is just plain ghetto.
Wide walks, good pedestrian lighting, a few trees, appropriately placed furnishings, and just a sprinkle of public artwork will make a world of difference along that stretch.

Unrelated to that: looks like they're digging up sewers/utilities around Jasper and 96Street.. hoping this is sign that we may see some work start on the Armature this summer. Anyone in the know on this?

Going to Bell tower today, I looked at the east lobby that was renovated last year and it looked very barren. How about more seating, and more plants for a more "meditation garden" feel?
