WOW when was the last time we had new theatres built in the metro area!? and in an interview with Danny Williams he said there are movie theatre companies interested in his new development.... ABOUT TIME!!

we have been talking about the changes coming to the city for a long time now, and I think we are finaly seeing them all come! imagine these stories say a month before the first fortis proposal! there was nothing compared to the amount of activity happening recently!

As much as it upsets me, I'm not surprised by this. It makes me wonder if any of these people have ever been to downtown areas of other cities. It's a 12 storey hotel... sure that'd be unrecognizable in other cities' skylines!

Other than the Mariott, how long has it been since a hotel was built downtown? The downtown has become busier each year and this trend will continue, especially when the convention centre expands and more business moves in. The airport is seeing annual increases in passengers; the evidence is there, the city needs these developments. People were complaining about loosing their privacy; I'm glad they don't live in a subdivision where neighbors basically live on top of each other.... give me a break!

50 people came out to complain about this development. I hope the city considers the other 100+ (or may be even more) people who live in the area that did not complain about it.

It is known that there is a shortage of hotel rooms in St. John's, especially in the summer tourist season. Last summer I was back home for a visit. My wife and I had an opportunity to spend a night out and we couldn't get a hotel room anywhere in the city. For a Monday Night!! There wasn't even a convention in town. Not one room was available. Not downtown. Not out on Kenmount Rd. Not out by the airport or on Portugal Cove Rd. Nothing! If St. John's want's to keep growing it's tourism and convention industry these types of large hotel developments are desperately needed. And downtown is where the conventions take place and where most business is done so that is where they must be put.

One of the smartest comments I have heard from someone who has been interviewed on tv about downtown development was the other night. I can't remember if it was for the hotel or the Deacon building but an older women who was interviewed from her house, that would lose its view, said that it was nice to have a view but that her view doesn't pay taxes. If her neighbors would just click in.

It's funny that people complain about having to pay higher taxes because the value of housing is going up, yet they complain that development might bring down the value of their home.

Also interesting to note that this proposal projects the St. John's city core population to be 125,479 which is a huge increase from the last census which was at 100,000'ish. Mount Pearls population is projected at 24,671 and CBS at 21,966

^^ see that tehre is a theatre there!?

looks pretty good and not bad well layed out, not like stavanger. I also like the whole plaza layout (kinda like churchill square) and the little strip at the bottom looks like it will be a street of retail

Mount Pearl Assessing Transit Services

This should be interesting, I hope something moves on transit issues, if mount pearl has good transit (probably will seeing they tend to do their services better) then that will open mount pearl up a bit more to more development IMO.. maybe some condos or larger/taller building?.. who knows

I don't know what they are using for population estimates because CBS's is outdated and the St. John's numbers are obviously including other communities.

Here is the plan for that extension of the stavanger area (not great quality I took it from the video)... you can see the difference in the layout from the southlands development ... why dont they encourage better layout??

Can you imagine if these big box developments were made malls instead! they would be HUGE malls, and only take up a portion of the space they do now. we would have like 6 or 7 malls then in the metro area.. i think we could use a new larger modern mall, it'd be cool
