Now if we could only get a direct flight to Iqaluit. We could hope on the just announced Greenland Air Flights.

With the amount of mining starting in the Baffin and Greenland region YEG could get some benefits. That and Stat Oil is starting exploration in the Baffin Bay Region.

Was out at the airport yesterday again, looks sharp. My question is the same as I asked when the last expansion happened, are they now going to upgrade the North Terminal to bring it up to date? It is horrible.

^My gut feelings say yes. If SSP and C2E forums are affective, they are most likely perusing through it like we are to get an indication of Edmontonians want. Maybe once current expansion is complete, an announcement will be made- knock on wood!

^^It is part of their long term plan. Prior to approving the current expansion, the plan was to re-do the north terminal and built a peir off the northernmost portion off to the west (so it would branch off at 45 degrees). That expansion was to cost 100 million. While in the planning stages, it was determined it would not be adequate as it would only bring the capacity up to what it is currently.
Future expansions will include expanding from the original terminal towards the west. Based on a discussion I had with Mr. Milley, it is not out of the question to demolish the old portion as part of the next phase or phase after that.

There are some long-term renderings in their strategic plan document I think. Whether or not these are out-dated now, I'm not sure.

Why demo? renovate it at much less cost and time.

Airports are about building empires, not about being entirely rational. Look at Terminal 1 in Toronto or the new International pier in Calgary!

That being said, since the airports take the long view, last thing they want is to renovate that section, reach capacity way before the reno is paid for, and not have a good place to expand without causing a capacity crunch.

Talking to a former employee of the airport who I work with now, the plan at one time was to demolish that portion and rebuild it. The demolishing has been thrown around out there before.

He said to me as well that once they finish this new portion of the airport we could potentially see more expansion within a year...but that was speculation on his part.

There is a purpose to demolish portions of airport terminals when they no longer can function uniformly with the rest of the newer portions of the facility. Technology for baggage handling changes. And baggage processing at mid-sized and large airports are key to align with the airport authority's strategic plans. For example, if the route development strategy is to attract an airline or airline alliance to use facility as a hub, then the airport terminal needs to be designed to move people and baggage efficently and effectively as possible. Airlines want to know how quickly transfers can take place because to be as efficient as possible aircraft wants to spend as little time at the gate as possible. Airports terminals, especially smaller ones, that were designed in the 60's did not even contemplate automated baggage handling. Bags are manually unloaded and hauled to the carrousel on the other side of the wall from where passengers pick them up. Bags that need to be transfered to another aircraft must be manually sorted. New airport terminals, all the bags are unloaded onto a conveyor, and the system takes the bag either to the proper carrousel, or directly to the gate (or close to it) of the aircraft that the bag is being transfered to.
The original terminal is not designed or set up to facilitate a fully automated baggage handling system that is integrated with the rest of the airport terminal.

Just a quick point, the baggage handling equipment was upgraded about 5 years ago.

There is also a phenomenal amount of asbestos in that section of the terminal.

Air Canada adds New York City Flights to Counter Westjet

Don't get excited, it's YYC flights. This is the one of the business headlines, verbatim, on edmontonjournal.com. Why is the Journal advertising Calgary flights?

CALGARY — Air Canada is boosting its flights to New York City, just as rival WestJet is poised to enter the market.

Canada’s largest carrier said it will begin flying into John F. Kennedy International Airport in May, and at the same time will offer hourly flights to LaGuardia to appeal to business travellers.

New Developments at YVR

An interesting read as YVR fights for flights: (I posted on C2E)

YVR launching a $1.8-billion upgrade
airport charges to airlines are being frozen for five years
provincial tax on jet fuel is being removed
airport improvement fee is going up to $20, from $15

"“The aviation industry is a very competitive industry and if YVR wants to continue the sort of growth projections that we’ve enjoyed in the past, and the job creation, we have to attract more carriers,” Larry Berg, president and CEO of the Vancouver International Airport Authority, said Wednesday.

Mr. Berg said Edmonton is opening 12 new international gates next month and Calgary is building a new runway and 22 new gates for 2015.

“Neither Calgary nor Edmonton has the passenger traffic to fill those gates today – so guess whose traffic they are looking at?” he said.""

From what your describing, if you look at it from an arial view, our airport has the potential of looking like an actual plane itself. That would be cool! As well, very affective way of building a terminal.

My gf is an engineer on this project. It's quite the task. Beyond the physical upgrades the article mentions, the airport's goal is to have people arrive from Asia, pass through customs, then board their connecting flights to Canada and the US within 30 minutes. It's an ambitious target, and they've only just started work on it.

It means building a second customs hall, installing high-speed baggage systems, and repositioning airline infrastructure.

Incidentally, she showed the YEG video that was posted on the forum a short time ago to the YVR architect, and his comment was that it looked a lot like the Vancouver airport... and that you don't set yourself apart by copying others (his words, not mine - I think the expansion looks quite exciting).

They're not flights from YYC.

Sounds a little like suspender-snapping to me. "Yeah, us big boys get it right. These podunk towns think they compete with the likes of our god-given talents?!? Mooowwwahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!! Tremble before our superiority!!!" Ok, a lot of exaggeration thrown in for effect, but c'mon man, it's a freakin' airport. Physical limitations exist that can't simply be made to go away (unless they start to pre-clear in China before flying to YVR ) Besides, comparing the expanded YEG to today's YVR is hardly a step in the wrong direction. Seems to have worked well enough for the them over the last 20 years. Since Edmonton is not the farthest west conurbation in Canada, it will never, I repeat never, hope to have anything near the same amount of international flying that YVR does. Therein lies another physical limitation that cannot be undone.

My spouse and I have already registered; we're going to take lots of pics of the new terminal & test the WIFI reception in there. The scenario we're given is an 11 AM flight to Phoenix, and arriving back in Edmonton. I'll post some of our pics ASAP...

1,400 volunteers test airport operations

Edmonton Journal

Thursday, January 26, 2012

This Saturday, 1,400 people will arrive at the Edmonton International Airport with no intention of travelling anywhere.

They've volunteered to go through airport check-in and security as part of a test run of operations in the newly expanded terminal.

"It's a very unique opportunity to get a be-hind-the-scenes look at an airport's facilities," said Sarah Meffen, an airport spokeswoman. "I also believe this community is very invested in supporting its infrastructure. People want to ensure their airport is operating to the best of its ability."

Volunteers will arrive in waves and be given a scenario, such as being late for their flight or being selected for secondary security screening. The exercise is "absolutely essential" to make sure things run as smoothly as possible when the expansion - a U.S. passenger lounge - opens Feb. 11.

This will be the second phase of the 44,500-square-metre expansion to open. Central Hall, a 1,500-square-metre area of shops and restaurants, opened in December. New domestic and international gates are set to open in July and August.

Volunteers are being provided with parking spots at the airport, and prizes will be given away during the exercise, Meffen said.
