I guess there won't be underground trains taking passengers to different concourses like in Denver or Atlanta. I actually think this new design is more practical (from a passenger's point of view, maybe not for taxiing).

What is shown is the first phase of a longer expansion plan. Once this phase is complete, the next phase includes demolitioning the old concourses and building a separate paraellel concourse north of the terminal and south concourse. It will be connected with underground people movers. Again, this is longer down the road. But one of the tunnels for connecting the two concourses is already in place.

2022!? Yikes! That seems forever off. However, when all is said and done, the old airport will always be immortalized in Dumb & Dumber.

Exact details of where airlines will be located hasn't been finalized yet but one of the ideas for the new terminal/concourse was to be able to incorporate all aircraft, regional and mainline, into all gates rather than have segregated areas for each.

Only for the first phase. Originally, the first phase included constructing part of the second parallel concourse. Now it will be in a later phase much down the road. It should be noted, the later phases are not reflected in the 1.8 bil price tag.

I couldn't find any information in the airport upgrade plan about extending the runways. Skyguy or anyone else have any information on when we will see the runways extended and the possible new runway we saw on plans a year or so ago?

Also, are the runway upgrades also included in the $1.8 Billion renovation cost or is it separate

That first link is pretty cool showing each of the steps of the first phase. And who knows maybe "future phase 2" will be needed much sooner than expected

The 1.8 billion figure is just for phase 1 of the new terminal, the parking structure/light rail station, new facility maintenance building, and rental car facility.

Any runway projects will have a separate budget.

It sounds more like the entire structure will eventually be scrapped and rebuilt in phases.

The fact that they referred to it as "End of Phase 1" and also call it South Concourse East and West, rather than simply Concourse East and West. Says that eventually, maybe in 15 years, that phase 2 will include the north concourse.

That presentation really helped to understand the flow.

I'll second that.

In another note. After seeing that the south phase of FrontRunner will be opening at the end of this year, I tweeted to @RideUTA to ask when the airport line opens. Within moments, they replied "2013." I guess that's just in time for all of the chaos to begin at the airport. If it's not one thing, it's another. But hey, any development news is good news. Especially when it's forward progression.

Also, I am somewhat disappointed that UTA didn't see the I-15 CORE project as an opportunity to capitalize on trying to gain riders before that project is complete. They did the same thing with Legacy Highway; opening the north phase of FrontRunner at about the same time Legacy opened. I would have thought that they could have tried to take advantage of the congestion that WAS, not open right when two completely new highway lanes open in each direction.

I only wish they could figure out a way to integrate the existing parking garage into the new airport. I love driving much too quickly up and down those round ramps between decks. Seems a waste to demolish a structure that's seismically sound and not even 20 years old.

The current parking garage is too small for current and future needs and will need to be demolished to make way for the east side of the new concourse. The new garage will hold nearly 4x the number of cars what the current garage does. By the time the old one is demolished, it will be more than 25-30 years old. I think the airport got plenty of life out of it.
