EIA in 2011 – Helping the Capital Region grow

EIA kept pace with community demand

December 28, 2011 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (EIA) expanded to serve the community in many ways in 2011. Expansion 2012 continues on time and under budget, aviation business and air service continue to expand to support business and passenger demand, and EIA continues to receive immense support from our customers as we build a world-class airport for them.

“Providing exceptional air service to our community is critical to the growth of our economy,” said EIA President and CEO Reg Milley. “EIA and our partners have invested energy and resources to ensure we bring outstanding opportunities to the Capital Region, and the response from our community continues to surpass our expectations.”

Highlights of 2011 at EIA

Passenger Numbers Climbed: Community demand for more air service increased sharply over the course of the year. 2011 saw record levels of travellers to the US and the busiest November in EIA history; the first time the airport served more than 500,000 passengers in that month.

Numbers of Passengers Served at EIA by November 30, 2011

¨ Domestic 4,416,970 Year to Date = 1.8 % growth

¨ Transborder 987,485 Year to Date = 8.2% growth

¨ International 333,418 Year to Date = 4.2% growth

¨ Overall 5,737,873 Year to Date = 3.0% growth

¨ Rolling 12 Month total 6,255,657

Impressive growth for Transborder and International...well done YEG. I think we'll surpass these figures again for 2012.

I think txborder will be approaching 1.2M next year, which is impressive when you look at the totals from ''03-'04. If by some miracle a flight to FRA was to appear in the next year or two, YEG should/could surpass 7M by 2013 easily.

Anyone spot the Swiss A340 that stopped in YEG on the way to SFO today? Presumably a medical divert but I've heard nothing.

A friend (who lived in Edmonton) flew in from Toronto to Calgary to Edmonton.

Direct flight cost $200 more.

A family member flew from Vancouver ---> Calgary ----> Saskatoon as air Canada has only 1 direct flight between Vancouver/Saskatoon and it did not fit in the time schedule.

At the end of the day, this will count as 8 (or 4?) passengers flying through Calgary.

It cost more because the direct flight was nearly full and the cheaper tickets were sold. Flying direct demonstrates a need and justification for additional direct flights.

Yes. Most of the time I have never seen a considerable difference in cost to justify connecting via YYC. My time is more precious than $100 bucks or so.

Could it be a 'Dreams take Flight' operation?

Edit: Or it is an Air Canada Jetz NHL charter. History of ACA7081 looks to have a lot of NHL city point to point flights.

I had a chance to walk through the domestic part of the terminal the other day and it is looking very nice! A great selection of shops and eateries! And it's a bright and inviting area! I hope they spiffy up the Gate 8-12 area to match the rest, as that area is looking very tired now.

So to compare to Dec 1997, just for shits and giggles (Dec 1997 in [brackets]):

Overall Dec 539,364 passengers [305,645] 76%

Dom 397,187 (4,814,157 YTD) [264,582 (3,210,113 YTD)] 50% (50%)

TB 97,981 (1,085,466 YTD) [36,040 (431,904 YTD)] 171% (151%)

Int 44,196 (377,514 YTD) [5,023 (78,606 YTD)] 780% (380%)

Year 6,277,137* [3,720,623] 68%

Put that in your pipe and smoke it invision edmonton
