Norquest is rather underwhelming... at least it integrates well with the existing building, I guess. Good riddance to that existing building on the corner of 7th and 102 though, the greenspace is much-needed I'd say.

MacEwan plans new downtown building to house Centre for the Arts and Communication

EDMONTON - A new building will spring up at Grant MacEwan University’s city centre campus in the next few years.

MacEwan university administration has been given the go-ahead to proceed with the design stage of a building that will house the Centre for the Arts and Communications. The centre is currently located at the university’s west-end campus at 10045 156th Street.

The new building is part of the university’s move to bring all of its programs to the city centre campus.

MacEwan university has four campuses, which is not an “efficient use of resources,” university president David Atkinson said Friday.

I saw very preliminary/conceptual drawings for this about 1.5-2 years ago, while attending a board committee luncheon.

It was very, very ambitious.

Edmonton's downtown core has drastically improved but still needs more pedestrian traffic, a Toronto consultant told a crowd of business movers and shakers.

"I think there's a kind of renaissance happening in this city and people may or may not see that," said Ken Greenberg, who heads up Greenberg Consultants.

"But I think your downtown population is still really tiny. You need to get more people living downtown and more people on the streets."

Greenberg examined the heart of downtown for several hours prior to speaking at Edmonton's Downtown Xposed Symposium on Thursday. Through various presenters, attendees heard opinions on the future of Edmonton's downtown core and dove into current projects, as well as urban design and development talks.

Greenberg's presentation focused heavily on a "phenomenon" occurring around the world – shifting from an automobile-focused society back into a more walkable, mixed-use and integrated downtown.

Those bump-outs are very soup-du-jour and I don't think that'll age well. Reclad looks good but I too liked the old facade. As noted before, the building needed a good spit polish to restore it more than anything.

Lots of good stuff posted today... Edmonton is rockin' & rollin' with lots of great upcoming projects. 2012 should be a very good year for this town.

Those bump outs will be great to accommodate pigeons - leaving the side of building and sidewalk covered in well - permanent "soup".

Edmonton fills 558,000 square feet of office space in 2011

EDMONTON - Edmonton exhibited a voracious appetite for office space this year, according to Avison Young’s latest report.

“The Edmonton office space inventory absorbed more net area than the last five years combined,” reads the Q4 2011 report from the real estate firm. The report says Edmonton filled 558,000 square feet of office space in 2011, spurred by the expansion of firms like Epcor, Intact Insurance and Enbridge, along with the federal Department of Justice.

The total is the market’s highest since 2004. Annual absorption between 2005 and 2010 peaked at 300,000 sq. ft. The market disgorged 270,000 sq. ft. last year.
