Tea Party foe of transportation tax

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/blog/...tea-party-foe-of-transportation-tax.html

Dave Williams
Staff Writer - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Metro Atlanta’s $6.1 billion transportation funding referendum got some pushback Friday from the Tea Party.

Representatives of the small-government, low-taxes group struck at the concept of regionalism, the philosophy behind the regional penny sales tax proposal, during a public hearing at the state Capitol. The referendum’s supporters, including metro business leaders, say Atlanta’s traffic congestion is too big a problem to be solved with piecemeal efforts stopping at city and county lines.Regionalism was at the heart of legislation the General Assembly passed last year authorizing transportation funding votes on next summer’s primary ballots in metro Atlanta and 11 other regions across the state.
But on Friday, Tea Party activist Susan Stanton told a legislative study commission that regionalism flies in the face of home rule, a sacrosanct principle in Georgia of the right to local self-government established in the state constitution. She objected to a core provision in the legislation stipulating that the proposed sales tax would be collected in every county in regions that approve the referendum, even if a majority of voters in that county oppose it.
“County voters may not opt out,” Stanton said. “Local governments will lose control.”

There is really no substantive difference between living in a low-tax city in a high-tax county and living in a low-cost county in a high-tax MSA. Of course Atlanta is still not really high tax anywhere, but the city is dependent on the county like the county is dependent on the region.

The ARC is gaining more control, which is important and necessary. All counties and municipalities, and MARTA, have a seat in the ARC, so everyone is represented somehow to some extent.

Additionally, there is a 10-member "assembly" in charge of the Transportation Initiave referendum, and a 5-member team chosen from within those ten members (Mayor Reed is among the five) drafts the bill. This thing has been 4+ years in the making with close to a quarter million inputs from polls and town meetings all across the 10-county region. The Tea Party should go crawl in a cave and never come back out.

We are missing out on major corporate relocations and job growth. The biggest thing talked about in the capital markets in relation to Atlanta is congestion. School issues are a distant second, but considering American public schools in general suck and are rife with corruption, Atlanta's problems there are just "in with the pack."

Whether the congestion argument is valid or not (our congestion has gone way down over the past decade, helped in part by dismal unemployment), it's a perception problem that PR will not be able to solve.

Thanks for the updates, simms.

Also, the seafood restaurant in the old Vickery's spot on Crescent appears to be in build out.

The plethora of new restaurants in Midtown definitely seems bubbilcious. We've got what, at least half a dozen restaurants all in the middle or upper end of the scale in build-out, in addition to everything that has opened in the last couple years?

Good to see the new 12th st apartments in site work. That will be an awesome building to watch go up, right in the middle of everything.

GDOT wins $4 million high-speed rail grant to study Atlanta-Charlotte route

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) received a $4.1 million grant to complete a service development plan and environmental study for the 250 mile passenger rail corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte. GDOT is contributing $1.125 million for this phase of the project. GDOT recently announced a new Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal in downtown Atlanta, which is being designed to accommodate high-speed rail service.

With America’s population set to grow by 100 million over the next 40 years, high-speed rail will play a vital role in reducing congestion and meeting America’s long-term transportation challenges,” said Secretary LaHood. “High speed rail projects like these in Georgia, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C., will employ local workers, use American-made materials and lay a strong foundation for future economic growth

Hey... at least it creates justification for making the Transit Hub be HSR compatible. How awful would it be if HSR did end up happening but atlanta didn't have a terminal that could accomodate it?

Delta Community Credit Union is renovating the brick building on the corner of Crescent Avenue and Peachtree Place in Midtown (behind Margaret Mitchell House). The site is fenced off and has a sign posted saying that the bank will open in 2012.

Good thing the Olympics came to Atlanta back in '96, or half of America wouldn't know what Atlanta is. The Olympics and all the developments put Atlanta on the map and made it a real city. Think about it. Before the Olympics, no GA Dome, Phillips Arena, BofA Plaza etc.

I was hoping they would be demolishing it but at least it's going to have some sort of use now.

Atlanta had a supertall, a metro system, and millions of people before the Olympics ever came. I think they would be doing just fine regardless.

Everybody...I forgot to report. I went to STK on Friday night! Had two drinks and two appetizers...bill was about $68, though it was "on the house."

VERY expensive place. I tried the pickled prawns and the tuna tartare. The prawns were huge...but pickled lol, and the tuna was basically one bite.

There was a DJ. Our server was a dancer for the Hawks. One of the Bert Show guys was in there. Definitely a very hip place for young people and wealthy gay guys! Let's just put it this way, I felt a little underdressed without $2,000 John Varvatos shoes on...

The supertall you're refering to was built in 1992. The Olympics are announced 8 years in advanced. The Georgia Dome was also built in 1992. Don't forget Centennial Olymipc Park. The Olympics put Atown on the map.

The point is that Atlanta wasn't exactly unknown prior to the Olympics...most Americans should be well aware of any city of 3 million, not to mention the exposure from the Democratic National Convention, Gone with the Wind, CNN/Turner Broadcasting Headquarters, the Atlanta Child Murders, Delta Airlines/Hartsfield Int'l - just to name a few high profile aspects of the city. Someone would really have to be very uneducated/uninterested in his environment to know nothing about Atlanta (or any other major U.S. city).

The location for the 1996 Olympics was announced in September of 1990, SIX years prior to the event. The Dome and other buildings built in 1992 were already planned prior to the announcement.

The Olympics were a great boost for the city and for it's name recognition, but Atlanta already had at least national name recognition and was already growing/booming prior to the announcement.

I have never seen John Varvatos shoes for $2k. Maybe $900, tops.

Now Prada or Gucci, yeah I could see $2k.

Rendering of mixed-use project in Buckhead. I don't see this being built any time in the near future.

Well, the average graduation rate in the United States is around 50%, and 'every' nine seconds someone in the U.S becomes a dropout.
