Is the first page of this thread updated? Because I'm not sure which building are now in the construction process or approved or otherwise.

Some Old City Hall history by the Leader-Post's Will Chabun (coincidentally just posted last week)

http://blogs.leaderpost.com/2011/12/01/neat-picture-from-reginas-history/

Quote:
Much has been made about the fact that this magnificent old building was torn down, but I clearly remember how, about 20 years ago, the late George Bothwell (former city councilor and lifelong heritage buff said it was, sadly, unavoidable. Incidentally, George (who died in 1996 or so) was the guy credited with spearheading the campaign to save Government House on Dewdney Avenue and therefore had heritage credentials second to none. His “take”) was that the foundation of this version of City Hall was in very poor shape and that rebuilding it would be prohibitively expensive if it wasn’t impossible in engineering terms.

I would like to see Regina open a new mall in the suburbs or renovate an existing one on the scale of the Cross Iron Mills mall in Calgary (or close to it). I understand the frustration with the big box store mess in the east end, but what other options are there in Regina?
Because Shopping Malls in general are duds. This isn't a Regina specific case, most Cities have a swath of under performing malls. The model is outdated, unless you have a center which can attract and keep a host of upper-tier tenants then you will get your Golden Miles and Vic Squares off the mix. Malls we're created in the days of suburbia and the car, downtown's wanted to make fake environments to convince people in the burbs to come downtown and spend money. They created islands of concrete to keep patrons as far away from the "real world" as possible. Most malls have done some work to open themselves back up but most remain duds.

Unless you are able to attract top-end tenants or big anchors you will fall into despair and oblivion. IMO the "Shopping Mall" is outdated. Nobody is building these things anymore unless they are in Dubai and China and have tons of cash.

The majority of the malls are owned by big conglomerations and REITs whom care nothing about the local market they are present in. Until the paint starts peeling and mold surfaces do they rush in to fix their properties up.

If I had my way Cornwall would be blown up with a "Arcade" put in its place. A opened up mall which is more about shopping. A mix between a open air "lifestyle" center with a modern take on the old school Arcades to shield us from our harsh winters (but still with the ability to open up in the summer times). Toronto has the first outdoor shopping center, it would be nice to see Regina get Canada's first "Arcade"

Some type of modern retractable element to open it up in the summer

Well hey how about we just blow up Cornwall, extend F.W. Hill Mall and throw a glass skin over the thing. It would be Stephen Avenue on steroids!

Wow, the city hall was amazing. They should have converted it into a museum with a ultra modern addition. That would have been sweet. Regina has some pretty decent historic architecture. Moreso even than Calgary and Edmonton I would say...

What kind of architecture era/design would the old gingerbread City Hall be described as? It looks so unique, I can't think of anything else in Canada off the top of my had that is so ornate.

We had a lot of great bones. What I'd give to have this building back and some of our old streetcar lines back!

They are flooding the skating rink today on the plaza. Unfortunatley it is extremely small. They say they will make it larger in future years - and hopefully move it south so it is not in the middle of the traffic lane!

I have to disagree. There are many new shopping malls in Europe. I cant list all of them, but here are few:

*Palac Flora (Prague)
*Globus (Kiev, Ukraine)
*Most (Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine)
*Victory Gardens (Odessa, Ukraine)
*Gold Plaza (Baia Mare, Romania)
*Sun Plaza (Bucharest, Romania)
*Malldova (Chisinau, Moldova) - I visited this mall many times when it was opened in October 2008. One word - amazing! The design is fantastic! 4 storey shopping mall with a fountain on the first floor (with amazing lighting effects). City's population is 500,000 , and shopping malls are thriving in it.

Ukraine for example, has DOZENS of new shopping malls (and many to be opened in the next 2-4 years). Romania and Bulgaria too (many many new malls). So its not only Dubai and China.

In the North American context no one is building them anymore though.

Actually the American Dream Meadowlands is still under construction, it's owned by the same group who owns the West Edmonton Mall.

Sure, there's always going to be outliers. That being said, that's not a project anyone is going to want to copy as it has been called "the worst retail failure ever".

Meadowlands has been "under construction" for around 8 years. It was supposed to be finished years ago and has been plagued by construction and financing setbacks. It's a failure and I don't think it will succeed at all.

Horrible example.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Who on earth is going to go skating on this driveway sized rink in the middle of a road?

*shakes head*

When i heared of an ice rink going in downtown by vic park i thought it was going to be that whole area where the light structures are(beam looking things) and the benches(so people can sit, tie up skates etc) not this little patch of ice in the middle of it all. Weak
