I found this article in the Leader Post archives very interesting. The CP Rail Yards relocation talk goes back 30+ years.

That is interesting. Sounds like that was for the tracks too.

From the sounds of things there used to tracks where Lewvan runs?

That is correct. Used to go south of the city, you can kinda see where they used to be on Google earth. There was a spur line to the air port and I remember the round house that used to be at the north yard as well as the last remaining portion of track that used to go that south before they built the train bridge.

Both the Lewvan and Arcola East are on old rail right of ways.

I have searched the web several times to find a picture of the 3D model created for the railyards back 30 years ago. I remember seeing it on TV but I can't find it anywhere.

At my parent house. I have an old map from the 1940 1950 era, shows all the old rail way lines in the city and other stuff like: The old broad street bridge over the wascana. The south portion of the ring road but not the north portion of the ring road. A rail yard where the field house is as well as spur line for the exhibition with Pasqua still be the road in front and not Lewvan. Two extra runways at the airport which I assume would have been the old ones. I probably should put this in the I remember thread? So I won't say anymore. I also wish I knew where that map is now. Would never be able to find it now there.

Ok, so maybe not an official groundbreaking, but a week or two ago there was an announcement that construction had started, I've posted the LP article below. And from what I can tell nothing has started at all as there is zero action on the site, so not sure what constitutes construction starting but apparently not much!

Yes, that's right. The Lewvan's northbound lane was where the CNR track used to be. I grew up on Wood Crescent - and the trains (1-3/day) used to shake us up real good! The tracks were removed during the fall of 1980. The city began to work on Lewvan Drive (south) during the spring of '83.

Its frustrating that, amidst all of the chest-thumping and back-slapping, newspaper headline writers keep forgetting that Saskatchewan (and Regina in particular) is home to several of the most disfunctional and impoverished urban neighbourhoods in Canada.

This is a problem endemic to all of Canada, and maybe with Attawapaskat (sp?) being in the news, some real solutions will actually start to be found. And I think once we finally make progress on the major issue of native poverty, the other issue affecting north central (gangs and crime) will start to become more manageable. But this is an issue that is bigger than Regina or Saskatchewan on their own can handle, and this discussion is probably best left to another thread.

There is plenty of work out there if people care to work. My father was an immigrant and came from conditions 10 times worse. They ate 1 meal a day for weeks on end. The difference is that he never had a sense of entitlement as many of the first nations do in this country thats why he became a successfull business person. When you have a sense of entitlement you have absolutely no drive to better yourself.

Fair enough. Nonetheless, I think that it is important to remember that Saskatchewan's boom, like all booms, is leaving some people behind.

Well, as Nathan suggested, this thread is probably not the correct place for this discussion. It is enough for me to just say that I think that this is an absurdly simplistic explanation for a very complicated problem.

Costco has appled to the RPC to build a gas bar and redo their parking lot, including more trees, which I beleive I noticed this fall they had already started planting.
