Yeah but Regina is also encouraging a younger demographic to move there by building condo towers close to/in downtown and considering huge public projects like the Multi-use entertainment facility and Public Library projects. Also, all of the potash mines should bring in some younger guys to work in the mines right?

I was in there on Monday afternoon around 3PM and it wasn't too busy. Likely 5-6 staff members and perhaps only slightly more customers than that.

One thing that struck me was how underutilized the retail space was. Its a decent-sized space, especially what they have done in previous years at Exhibition grounds, and the offering on Monday was quite sparse. Although one employee said they were getting a "giant" shipment on Tuesday.

More good news for Saskatchewan as Saskatoon is also having a banner year for building permits. This just goes to show how strong the economy in our province is. Hope we see this translate into continued population and development growth.

I love seeing these huge numbers. Its really hard to use permit values to paint a picture of the entire economic situation. For example, CCRL is doing a 2 billion dollar expansion, but the permit values do not reflect that, as only their piles and buildings require permits. The majority of the project is not captured in Regina's permit records.

Yeah i find that to be weird, we have a 2billon dollar expansion going on at the refinery but like none of that is included in building permits, arent they building new sections??

I think its just a matter of time before we catch saskatoon, there boom started a while agoo, regina's is just begining and seems to be moving a bit faster then stoons, maybe not tho( just looking at all the construction in the city that will attract people). I just think that in 20years or less the 2 citys will be very similar in population, infastructure etc. Except for the universitys, U of S recives probaly 3xs the funding U of R does from both levels of goverment

I was reading thgrough the Saskatoon future growth plan and they state that an LRT is viable with 2,000,000 m^2 of downtown office space.

Regina currently has 5,011,472 square feet of office space downtown which correlates to about 565,000 m^2. With the addition of Tower III, 1855 Rose Street and the potential of Tower IV we would be adding nearly 100,000 m^2 of office space in the next five years.

This really isn't that far off from viability. We're approaching the 1,000,000 m^2 of downtown office space.

Also, this only includes Class A, B and B+ office space. Any class C office space downtown isn't included.


I think we should really start to plan our future growth with an LRT in mind. It is an inevitability that it will eventually become needed.

I can't say that it won't be just another empty lot - but a parking lot it won't be. Surface parking lots are no longer permitted within the downtown.

I agree that right now is the best time to PLAN for Llight rail transit. At this stage, it would be so much easier to set aside ROW for lrt. Less expensive compared to 20-30 years from now. I just hope the city has this in mind and can start to budget for it. For if we want to be a vibrant successful city, we need more than just buses to get around. Adding a second mode of reliable transportation would do wonders to the prosperity of our people, businesses and the like. Hopefully, we can do what Calgary did and start planning ahead, while learning from some of their obvious mistakes.

They can build the new entertainment district around the rail yard in a style that will allow for LRT. Plus, once the tracks are gone, they can plan some future TOD's along the route the tracks were. I dunno, some food for thought...
