so then WLRT by 2025?

NWLRT by 2030?

Sweet, I am going to be 50 by the time we have a functioning system:<

SELRT will be only 4 years behind NLRT, for a whole line. It could take longer than 4 years to complete WLRT, but it's attaching to an already completed line so it can easily open a station or two at a time.

The reality is that the City does not have access to an infinite amount of money. Getting the SE line completed by 2018 is an aggressive goal imo. Plus every other major city also have their hat in hand to the province and feds for help. It's not all going to happen when we want it to.

^then change the model.

Add a 1 or 2 cent/L gas tax for non commercial vehicles that goes directly into LRT.

^I agree, the funding models should change. The bigger question is whether there is the 'political' will to do it.

^There better be. That said, I recognize the Feds are in play with something such as that in all likelihood.

But we need to make transit and other forms of travel more of a priority.

Would an extra $100 million a year really be enough do you think?

^There are solutions no doubt. But if the City establishes a funding strategy to pay for it, then senior levels will assume the City can take care of its own. This biggest problem is there is no long term strategy from the province or the feds to fund projects.
My idea would be to have a Provincial Municipal Infrastructure Sales tax of 1%. Revenues would be over and above the AMIS or MSI.
That would generate about $100 million per year for the City of Edmonton alone. That would provide ongoing LRT construction b/c we know the money is going to be there.

^but why not hit drivers (non commercial) with a relatively minor amount and at the same time improve transit. Reduce dependence on the automobile, give more credence to living closer, TODs, etc. etc. and improve transit.

^not as much $$. But I agree with you completely. In addition, change the tax legislation to allow municipalities to levy a fee on every new home. Wouldn't amount to much money - $1000 fee would amount to about $3million/yr. But it would be an added incentive to consider other options. UDI would go —.

You don't need to change any laws to make that happen.

/\ exactly. Calgary just altered their development fees substantially (although many argue not enough) to pay not just for the infrastructure upgrades, but strain new development will cost in the future.

Calgary's development fees were behind other municipalities, hence they caught up.

Councillors balk at land plan
Borrowing $161M for LRT right of way seen as automatic 5% tax increase

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Saturday, November 26, 2011

Councillors balked during their opening budget discussions Friday at borrowing $161 million to buy land for LRT construction and paying off the debt with a tax hike.

Property must be assembled for the southeast line over the next two years to meet the goal of starting construction in 2014, officials told the meeting...

With this attitude, hopefully the province steps up to the plate and replaces MSI with the education property tax room sooner rather than later. Or else there will never be enough money.

Mandel wants to speed work on southeast LRT

Edmonton mayor urges redirecting of funds

EDMONTON - The southeast LRT could be completed by the end of the decade using money redirected from other city construction projects, Mayor Stephen Mandel says.

City council has asked staff to report back in 2012 on how to raise $800 million for the new line, which officials last year recommended funding by some combination of tax hikes, extra revenues and shifting money from roadwork.

But Mandel says there should be cash available in the next three-year capital construction and equipment budget, now worth about $800 million annually, that could be used for the LRT.

Pedway at Health Sciences station

A note in this month's InTransit newsletter:

http://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/ets/transit-news.aspx

Health Sciences Platform Construction

Customers using Health Sciences LRT station will be encountering some construction on the station platform as preparation starts for the installation of an overhead pedway across 114 Street and along the west side of the station, connecting the new Edmonton Clinic South and the new Edmonton Health Academy.

Construction also includes an upgrade to the existing Health Sciences Station with the addition of a second floor connection to the station platform. The pedway will be located over the north end of the platform. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of 2012.

Activity this month is mainly preparation for the construction of supporting structures for an escalator, stair and elevator connection to the pedway. Two glass shelters on the platform will be removed as openings are cut for the construction.

The contractor will maintain pedestrian access at both ends of the platform and to the trains on each side during the installation. Look for notices on the platform as the project goes forward.
