Stopped by Smoke's Poutinerie today; had to park beside the public safety building and got a fresh reminder of just how UGLY that place is. I cannot wait for the police to move into their new HQ at the former Canada Post building so the city can TEAR THE OLD STATION DOWN.

Seriously, does the city have plans to tear down the old building and replace it with something more aesthetically pleasing?
This is one site I'd gladly take a gravel surface parking lot over the present structure...

Does anyone know why the Wagon Wheel - in the Norlyn Building - is impacted by SHED? No renderings I've seen show SHED development reaching that far west down the block. Perhaps I'm missing something?

The Norlyn Building is going to be torn down and replaced with a parkade for the new Stantec offices and ALT hotel.

How about replacing Dollarama? They never should have allowed that building to begin with. Should be no building less than 2 floors along Portage, and that particular one is a blight upon downtown. That the store serves a need is one thing but the building does nothing for the ambience of the street.

Edgy-looking downtown condos designed with youth in mind

"Waterfront Drive's latest condominium project is looking like something out of this world.

Green Seed Development Corp. and 5468796 Architecture Inc. are putting the finishing touches on their design plans for a proposed $6.0-million, 40-unit condo development to be built on MacDonald Avenue just west of Waterfront Drive.

"It kind of looks like a spaceship," Green Seed president Mark Penner said of the circular structure that will rest on stilts about nine metres (three storeys) above the ground. "It's pretty space-age."

The development at 62 MacDonald Ave. -- tenatively named 62M -- is sandwiched between Green Seed's other condo development on Waterfront, called You Cube, and the Disraeli Bridge/Freeway.

Penner said they're putting the building on stilts to raise it above the height of the bridge and the You Cube buildings. That way, residents will have an unobstructed view of the downtown and the nearby Red River.

And it'll be round, rather than square or rectangular, because it's a more energy-efficient design, said Johanna Hurme, a partner in 5468796 Architecture."

Even though the condo will be on Waterfront Dr, it doesn't look like it will really be along the actually waterfront at all.

If it's being built where I think it is, it'll be pretty far away from the rest of the Waterfront condos. It'll be closer to Higgins than it will the riverbank.

Speaking of which, there's a pretty nice Exchange-style building at 541 Waterfront Dr that looks like an excellent candidate for condo conversion. It will be right across the street from the new condos.

Longboat should build a multi-use parkade and stick the Wagon Wheel in a street level unit. I know its more expensive but at least you help make the street more inviting.

Also, while I like the new condo design, its a shame it obscures the awesome view of downtown Winnipeg from the Disraeli.

I should also introduce myself. I was actually on this board a couple of years back but took a hiatus (for what particular reason I can't remember). If anyone remembers, I frequently posted pictures from abandoned buildings and downtown.

The blocks of Hargrave on both sides of Portage are already one of the least inviting areas in downtown Winnipeg.

The north side really has nothing going for it as the west side of the block consists of loading bays for APTN and the Air Canada building along with a parking lot. The east side is eaten up by a lifeless entrance to 4Play a couple of parking lots, the Norlyn Block and a few sketchy businesses in the Alabama block.

Even if Longboat put in some ground level retail space, I can't see ANYONE wanting to spend the high lease rates to be there.

So move the restaurant somewhere until the parkade is built and then move it back? There's a flaw in that plan. Wagon Wheel needs to move to a permanent new location.
