On an unrelated note, is "Metropolis Winter Festival" still going to happen? It sounds really cool and just what Edmonton needs in the winter. For such a winter city, Edmonton should be more like Quebec City or Harbin, instead of just wearing the "Festival City" outfit like a Halloween costume in the summer that it is currently doing.

As for the winter festivals, you should check out the Deep Freeze Byzantine Winter festival on Alberta Ave in early Jan. Gets better and this year it will be incredible!

Any idea what is going on at the north edge of jasper ave between 122 and 123 street? whole block is fenced off are they going to demolish all the structures there?

This one certainly caught my eye: Urbia Tower. The thought of a 50 storey building in this city is wild, and of course I'll add, unimaginable prior to the closure of you-know-what. As for 122-123st, it is a very E/W rectangular building as Dialog tends to do. It will be ok, but not as good as what could have been IMO. I also liked that 60s/70s cinder block 2 storey.

That is/adjacent to the address of Gene Dubs home - one and the same. Dare we dream to think this could be returned to a a riverside pub and eatery? Amazing location.

Siding with Sobeys on vinyl

Some downtown residents are unhappy with the Sobeys store on the corner of Jasper Avenue and 104th Street - about window coverings of all things.

They claim the store's vinyl window coverings are not pedestrian-friendly because they don't allow a person walking by the store to see what's in it. Here's a hint: it's a GROCERY store. But if that connection proves an elusive one, by all means have a close look at the huge pictures of FRUIT and VEGETABLES on those window coverings and then draw your own conclusions.

The coverings actually serve two important purposes: they keep direct sunlight off the produce, helping maintain its freshness, and they shield cash register screens from sunlight, facilitating prompt and accurate checkout service. What's more, portions of the pictures on the window coverings are perfectly see-through and other portions have no picture surface at all.

Even so, Sobeys is apparently trying to find a solution that will placate the sidewalk critics. We suggest replacing the window coverings with mirrors so perfectionist passersby have a better view of the problem.
