Car2Go is like nicotine replacements for car users. At least it's not "cold turkey" per se. Although, I know what you mean that it gets tough when you have a) a family with toddlers, b) not exactly walking distance to everything and c) have lived in Texas all your life. But when you're within 2 miles of walking distance to everything, it goes without saying that you really have a mental disorder of some type when you have to be convinced that you don't really need a car. Those type of people need to be on "My Strange Addiction".

But if you're immediately outside of downtown, or live in downtown but have errands outside of downtown, I totally understand that it's not very easy to be without a car.

Apparently, there's a big water pipe that runs diagonal under that site. The city is moving that pipe to align with the streets, thus making it possible to dig/develop the site.

... The thing is is that MOST people have necessary errands (or friends) outside of downtown.

I know everyone is different, but I've been living my life like this since I moved here as an adult. Having said that, I end up meeting all of my friends downtown, or on the eastside (errands included). As we see the city grow in the coming years, we will also see more accessibility to things/stores we currently can't reach comfortably while being downtown. I hardly ever experience a struggle with errands.

I guess I'm one of those unique dudes who works, lives, and farts around downtown...

yeah i know what you mean. i guess i'm just talking about people who live, work and have almost everything they need to do in downtown and yet still feel the need to use their car. i guess that's the kind of people i was talking about.

Exactly. Most people still have things that they need to do outside of downtown. If this city would get their act together on transit, I'd be all for cold turkey. But that hasn't happened, so I'm not (yet).

especially the farts.... :-)
but really. I think it all about desire. You wanna do it. You will. eh?
I do maintain a car in my vertical gated community, but my almost 7 year old mini coop has < 40K on it. Not bad.
I have several close friends who have made it work living central with the use of Car2Go. And that's not just "downtown". That includes people on the East side and Terrytown.

building heights

I sent out some emails for a few building heights. I got an email back for the Marriott on Congress and the Hyatt Place at 3rd & Brazos.

Marriott:

33 floors
403 feet 8 inches to top of mechanical penthouse
375 feet 6 inches to the top of "tower" (the main roof I guess)
117 feet to top of podium (the base of the building)

Hyatt Place

17 floors
202 feet to top of the pyramid
191 feet 6 inches to top of high parapet
179 feet 6 inches to the low parapet

I'm guessing that last height is for the main roof parapet. Not sure about the higher one.

That's a nice surprise about the Hyatt. I wasn't expecting it to be 200 feet tall. I had guessed it would be around 180 to 190 feet.

And of course that's cool that the Marriott will be another 400 footer. At 403 feet to the top of the mechanical penthouse, it'll make it 2 feet taller than the Four Seasons Residences, to be the 7th tallest in the city.

Thanks for interrupting the overly long fart discussion with some good information. But alas, the fart discussion continued on after your post.

Nice! That part of downtown is going to be very dense. With both the Hyatt and 3rd & brazos under construction, it won't be long before we see these popping up in the skyline.

Also...I am so rooting for this to break ground

Add the Radio Tower

Don't forget to add the Eiffel Tower of Austin/Radio tower in clarksville.... Check it out.... This guy climbed the tower and then posted it online a year ago....

The tower is 89 meters I think...

Nice views though....
