There is talk of some kind of residential building on Water Avenue near Westbrook on a 25' x 100' lot (I think the one where that last little house/restaurant is). Obviously a long and narrow building and 12 or so floors tall. I'll buy the forum a round if this ever ends up going through; a second round if it gets approved.

@ Andy6: thanks for posting the Bentley Mays review of the Avenue building.

@ thurmas: Your comment seems a big exaggerated in its negativity. The name funnelators is indeed ridiculous, and I'm skeptical of need, look and functionality of these things (a bunch of other things like more money for transit, another round of tax incentives for downtown residential and keeping things like the library open later at night would probably be better ways for the city to spend money on urban revitalization) but street architecture can be a part of a successful urban area. Not to mention that, having just travelled to a bunch of other downtowns, it seems to me that Winnipeg has less homeless (or at least less visible) than many places. Plus the homeless are going to be 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 somewhere on the street and need somewhere warm so I don't think that that is really such a concern. Although your comment does imply the case that probably in the long run more money should be going to services which address that larger social problem. Anyhow, I'll admit that these may indeed 🞵🞵🞵🞵 and the money might be better spent somewhere else, but for now - given that having a place to stay warm as you wait for the bus, having a place to buy a paper or coffee on the street and having a bench to sit on might be nice downtown once and a while - I'm going to look past the dumb name and hope for the best.

@ pastorm: Am in full agreement that the ultimate vision and hope for downtown should be to make it a place where you don't need a car to live and where it is indeed easy to live without one. To all those on the car defensive, that doesn't mean making it awful to have a car, it means making the option available. Its a virtuous circle, but having that option is why there is so much residential near Osborne and why that street is lively on a Saturday afternoon and why most of the restaurants in the East Exchange are closed at that time - its the difference between being an urban neighbourhood and a suburb. One ought to believe that a downtown should be urban and its not odd to say so. The goal should be to emulate New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, wher you can have a car, but you don't need one.

To me funnelators are another pet project that is a waste of money. Unique attractions that the suburbs can't offer like da vinci at mts hall and middle class apartments and condos for younger people is what will help downtown not a giant version of a bus shack. I do find the $600 million shed figure interesting since the only known cost is the convention centre expansion for $200 mil and the $75 mil new hotel and $16 mil Met theatre re-fit.

Want to do something to help downtown? Kick all the garbage out of the public housing around Central Park. Found out an old friend is living there with her daughter as she gets back on her feet/goes to school. She fears for her safety riding the elevator, drug deals are made in the playground while a daycare is there. Drunks, gangsters. And every month they spray for bedbugs! Other than that she says she has a nice, roomy apartment! Not a good environment to raise her daughter though. But that's downtown living. Funnelators won't fix that.

the drug dealers stay cause they pay their rent on time cause they are on welfare while the people that need the housing strugle to pay get tossed cause they are having problems paying rent...

pretty sure thats another 546 project...i wasnt given the impression that it was anywhere near that tall....ive heard its pretty cool.

those guys are sure darlings of the press eh?...centre village is a really great project...as is the WRHA office building.

i cant say im in love with the one on grant or the waterfront drive ones though.

that article is indicating that the balconies of the avenue building will still be clad in aluminum....i really hope so...that will be spectacular.

We could put all of them (drug dealers, dumbasses, etc) on the D40s/Classics and chuck them out as well in 2014

Seriously though, we should get rid of them so I can walk in Downtown past 9 pm without looking behind my back a billion times.

no its just something from my archives thats dead and prolly had no hope in hell of happening to do with plug in i think it was just some sorta study comissioned for plug in or something as theres a bunch of models to do with it















speaking of my archives like to get a copy of the stuff for website and various other projects from the early 2000's if anyones got any they like to add to it
