there are some very good examples in gastown that show how to add on to a heritage building vertically...the key is setbacks and glass....
I don't think the City knows how they want to treat them. You get a different response from the heritage committee and UDAC (the setback issue in particular).

Not sure if they're doing any research on it but a few good case studies might make for a good article ...

Osborne Village is probably the only neighbourhood in the city that one could live very comfortably without a car...
Speaking of Osborne Village, is there going to be any more development? A few more mid/high-rise apartments possibly?

There is a Days Inn going on Sargent & Berry where the old Rookies Batting cages were (being demolished now), a new Homewood by Hilton is slated to be built on the same property across from the new Fairfield hotel and a new Hilton brand hotel will be built on Berry in the empty lot next to the Victoria Inn.

Not to mention the existing Hilton on Wellington will soon be undergoing a $6 million renovation.

........that's a crazy amount of hotels for one area.

The good thing is downtown will be getting the new 20 storey Alt hotel and a new highrise hotel (hopefully a high-end brand) for the Convention Centre development.

Would be awesome if the new hotel for the convention centre is a Fairmont just like they did for both halves of the convention centre in Vancouver

Yeah but from what I've heard, the one that is already there is disgusting.

Vancouver has 3 downtown, one at the airport and another one around an hour away. Not that crazy to have 2.

I wouldn't mind a Hyatt hotel by the convention center as well. I think a hotel that has yet to establish here would add to the mix definitively.

Much publicize dennistoun which was gonna be 19 storey condo complex has been scrapped for the time being. Don't think there's anything else in the pipe.

Does look like work is finally progressing on studio 511 on river which is a conversion. That was stalled for quite a while.

But Vancouver is like half a million people in a 40 mile radius, and the CMA third biggest city in Canada with a very important Airport...we're not quite there yet

The Fairmont in Winnipeg looks nasty from the outside, no question...that building isn't special to look at in any way, but the rooms are nice. It feels like a small Fairmont on the inside, so I think they nailed the vibe down pretty well.

But they should have a more prominent hotel (to look @)... That alt hotel is gonna be the nicest looking modern one for sure, and they know how to make their rooms look great - different vibe though than Fairmont.

Very much agree. Hyatt would be really nice indeed. Are there only Hyatt's in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary in Canada?

How is the Fairmont disgusting? I've had family who has stayed there who have quite liked it. Also, the Velvet Glove seemed pretty decent when I was there for my girlfriend's grandma's birthday.

Unique 'funnelators' key feature in slick new vision for bustling downtown

It's the Jetsons meets Times Square as development officials flesh out their vision of what Winnipeg's new downtown will look like.

The centrepiece of CentreVenture Development's vision for the new downtown is a so-called sports, hospitality and entertainment district (SHED), which would be awash in brightly lit buildings and sidewalks, electronic billboards, overhead banners, street planters and benches.

The interior demo on that one is underway.

It should be progressing fairly quickly now.

Sounds kind of half baked.... but at least some work is getting done on the cosmetics of the DT revitalization. That's something to be pretty happy about

I like to keep my "-inators" secret until i am ready to execute my evil plans. These are just cheap knock-offs of my "flush-winnipeg-down-the-toilet-inator" that i was scheming.

.........(speaking while doing my maniacal incessant hand wringing and mantis like posture)

I hear ya. Im partial to cars myself as thats all i do, especially being in the suburbs... my point is that there should be the option and the services in place downtown so that if people who dont have cars see downtown as a viable option for them. Why not make sure everything is available within walking distance. Thats how they have it in much of Europe. I know we arent the same, but wouldnt it be neat to dream about a downtown that allows for self sustainable lives? That could only help.

Sounds like funnelators are just going to end up being a warm place for hobos to piss in and crash for the night.

Don't know if this review of the Avenue Building (and other 5468796 projects) by John Bentley Mays of the Globe and Mail was posted. Very positive.
