Go to the Planning Commission's website:

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/cityclerk/boards_commissions/meetings/40_1.htm

There is an 8 page pdf about the hotel, but there is no new information or renderings.

Glass falls near Austonian high-rise

Quote:
Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 11:25 PM

12:30 a.m. update: A broken window was found on the 44th floor. The cause was unknown.

Earlier: A significant amount of glass fell on West Third Street late Tuesday, officials said, believed to be from the Austonian high-rise.

No injuries were reported and two cars were damaged by the glass. Officials are unsure where exactly the glass came from. However, the tint on the shards found on Third Street, which was closed briefly before 11 p.m. matched the glass from the nearly 700-foot-tall building, Austin Fire spokesman Peter Teliha said.

They even had to use starflight to see we the glass came from.

Yay! The Hyatt Place Hotel officially broke ground today. Several "dignitaries" were video taped shoveling measured amounts of dirt from a wooded platform.

NOTICE!!!!! In the above article they mention a June 1 start date for the Marriott Convention hotel!!!!!!! That's exciting!

So in about a year there will be at least three new cranes downtown! ( Why does that make me sooo happy? )

None of us! It's gorgeous. I especially am glad that it won't block Frost from the south.

I'm betting there will be more than that. The Marriott alone should need 3 cranes. If you remember the Frost Bank Tower needed 3 cranes. The Marriott and Frost both occupy the same size block and cover most of their block. I'm pretty sure it'll need 3 cranes then. The Hyatt and Whitley Printing tower should each have one. So there's going to be 5 cranes right across from each other. At its highest the Hyatt crane should be a tad over 200 feet high. The Whitley Printing site tower's crane will be almost 300 feet high and the Marriott's highest cranes should be over 400 feet high. Even the Hilton needed three cranes during its construction, and it occupies a smaller block than the Marriott will. It'll be interesting to see how they juggle that many cranes in such a tight space.

Oh, and yes, the posts earlier that were talking about me getting rid of someone, they were referring to someone who had posted spam. One of the moderators deleted it.

The next boom which has just started, is mostly tourism driven hotel construction. But I'm starting to worry for the first time that too many of the unique music venues are going to disappear because of land values and high rents like Emo's and now La Zona Rosa.

The main reason for the last boom which was residential construction and the current one is becasue of the downtown music and nightlife scenes. I wish the city would protect the (three?) entertainment areas of downtown from over development and make the sky the limit everywhere else.

Protecting that lone pecan tree instead of permitting a 40-story residential tower was ridiculous at a location between two other tall residential towers. The city should be spending more time encouraging and protesting the entertainment areas.

Emo's and LZR are both being sold. So something will still be there. And it really isn't like LZR has been all that busy as of late. They really haven't been having all that many shows going on there and only some of them have been all that good. Emo's though I agree, that is a major loss. Other than
Antone's I really can't think of a bigger possible loss. There was always something damn good there night after night.

Cost of doing business in those areas has gone up a lot but I think that other big venues are also hurting them. Moody Theater has been a huge hit. Other larger venues like Stubbs just keeps growing and is about to do so again. Mohawk seems to be doing very well and has been having many more shows (and much better ones) than LZR lately.

So, fairly decent blow to Austin happened yesterday.

F1 race along the NJ side of the Hudson for 10 years starting in 2013. Austin obviously will still have a great purpous built course.. but I have to think the bright lights of NYC is going to lure a lot of potential tourist money away from the Austin GP. It's also a really amazing looking course. It's a street course though, so it doesn't have the purpous built thing going for it that Austin does.. but given the USGPs financial issues lately, let's hope this doesn't scuttle the development in Austin before it gets going.

I don't understand why we'd have to envision a zero-sum game here and why the US can't accommodate two races.

The US had a hell of a time supporting a single race before.

I know a lot of F1 teams have been pushing for 2-3 US based races for the last few years (the US is most of the auto makers most profitable region). and long-term if both races make it, I think it would be a great thing for the sport as interest would surely increase nationally.

That said, this is a sport with a very small following in the US, and there is a battle for tourism dollars.

Lets also not pretend there haven't been some strange financial and political rangling going on in Austin over the last few months or a work stoppage. The NJ race being a street race will be much more cost effective to set up.
