I think the CIS is hoping that by hitching the Vanier Cup to the Grey Cup wagon, it will give university football more exposure. There is some logic in this idea, and I can really only see this as being a good thing... making Grey Cup week/weekend into just a really big football weekend, drawing more than one level of football in Canada into the celebrations.

Plus, I think the CFL is finally realizing that they need a stronger University football program in order to support more expansion going into the future (whether it be Ottawa, a maritime team, and down the road maybe even Quebec City or something). If they want to maintain the ratio, which I think many do, they will need stronger programs across the country that can produce larger crops of talent from the university ranks.

Good point. Was it the CFL that spearheaded the grassroots football boom in Quebec or was it something that kind of just organically happened?

I agree fully if the CFL starts rolling in cash in the near future they should start to pump money into CIS ball.

That's exactly it. For most cities, the Vanier's a break even venture at best. IIRC, there's a $75,000 hosting fee, and at least that amount that the city must put up to host special events in that week. Combine that with $150,000 or more to set up temporary bleachers for the smaller cities, and the inability to charge elevated prices for CIS football, it's generally not a money-making proposition...

I think it organically happened due to the re-emergence of the CFL in Montreal. Then after Laval got going and started having awesome success, I think it pushed it further. So I think the CFL was definitely the catalyst, and then it naturally/organically grew from there.

Yes, I would love to see more co-operation and involvement from the CFL. We are starting to see some of it, like tying the Vanier into the Grey Cup, and the CFL making a bigger deal of the scouting/combine. The Riders give money to community football (whether it is Hilltops/Thunder, Huskies/Rams, and down even to the minor youth levels). They also support it with a lot of players (retired and active) helping to coach the youth teams. I know when I go around the city, I definitely have seen way more young kids riding their bikes with their football equipment on. And I think this is almost a direct result of the Riders having more money in the coffers to spend.

Definitely excited for the Grey Cup to be coming back though. I'm curious how they will use the new square for festivities. It's going to be a great party.

Good observations. I'd say though that it was definitely more the Alouettes as a club than the CFL as a league. Pardon the pun but the Alouettes organization really got the ball rolling - especially Larry Smith at the time. The CFL eventually saw the Als had a good thing going and sort of jumped on the bandwagon later on in the game. I don't believe there really was an actual CFL strategy to conquer/reconquer Quebec. It was more the Alouettes that came to see the entire province as their home market and set about occupying the territory.

That's a bit of a scam actually. The Rams put on the 50/50 at the Rider games, then the Riders give at least half the proceeds to the 3 other clubs. While the Riders themselves don't really put anything into it besides allowing the Rams to run the 50/50 during their football games.

Actually, the Rams keep all the proceeds of the 50/50. The Riders give money to the Thunder, Hilltops and the Huskies from their proceeds of game tickets/merchandise sales. They don't give the Rams any money.

Way back when, the 50/50 duties used to be shared between the Rams, Huskies and Hilltops. But the Saskatoon teams had trouble finding enough workers to make it go, so they opted out.

In turn for making a pretty good profit from the 50/50, the Rams donate a good percentage back into the provincial football community (to high schools, RMF, ...)

If the Rams didn't have the 50/50, they wouldn't be able to survive. They don't get any funding from the UofR, so their biggest source of funding is the Rider 50/50.

Somehow I came across this simulation of Regina's downtown.  I did not read all the info in the forum but it appears the members post urban simulations that are based on Google Earth views using just shadows and roof outlines to guess what the buildings might look like.  It is a kinda interesting, parallel universe, Regina.

I'm not sure this was mentioned here before, but I heard rumors today of a new hotel going in at the corner of Parliament and Albert where the old Esso gas station was, and extending right through where the Mr. Lube is and Tomas Cook Restaurant. Anyone have info on this?
