This guy won't go down without a fight:

King's Highway 401 - Ontario by dougtone, on Flickr

(The Official name for Highway 401 is the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway for it's entire length, and has a secondary name called the Highway of Heroes for part of its route. New M-C Freeway shields haven't been made for some time.)

To be honest the thing looks like crap. All the shields on that post should be in good (or miserable) shape.

Let's make up our minds and remake these shields or make them RIP once and for all. They currently don't add much to the roadway, including Google Maps.

Eww. Where's the pride? I'm with you on this, fix it or get rid of it. It vaguely reminds me of seeing torn up faded canadian flags being flown...

It's become apparent to the rest of the country just how much in poor shape Quebec's infrastructure is. Why exactly is that? What has the government in that province been spendings it's money on the last 20 years?? Social programs?? I understand there's also a huge racket in the construction industry in Quebec as well.

It's too bad for such a long time the ruling party of soo many years was focused on tearing the country up, they could have focused on their own day-to-day needs like keeping up roads and maintaining bridges, tunnels etc. before someone gets killed.

Many of the other provinces are building what they need so they can properly maintain them.

Not sure if you agree with this but just compare Quebec's freeway system's size to Ontario's.
Kinda like the guy who finally got the cadillac only to discover he couldn't afford to gas it up.

Neglect isn't even close to describing the virtual abandonment of the unsustainable road infrastructure in my home province. During the Bouchard era, provincial finances were so bad that that much less than the bare minimum was spend on infrastructures. The legacy is collapsing overpasses. Not that the feds have been a better steward: witness the state of the Champlain Bridge, which is under federal jurisdiction.

That sign has taken a turn for the worse since 2004:

It's funny that of all the M-C shields that stood in Eastern Ontario three of four years ago that this is the only one that remains. To my knowledge, this was the only one that was bilingual (there may have been more, but I don't think any others survived into the 2000s.)

Somebody at MTO must appreciate just how rare that sign really is.

Some pics i took today of highway 1 construction at the Vancouver / Burnaby border area.

First, a few of the HOV ramps near Grandview

And some of the work happening on the #1 overpasses above Boundary road. Quite interesting how the are replacing a segment at a time and the new large retaining walls.

All pics are my own: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30634635@N03/?saved=1

Cheers

Yep, it is the Gateway project, essentially re-building the entire #1 from Burrard Inlet (the Cassiar tunnel) to Langley.

www.pmh1project.com

Includes a rebuild of the infamous Cape Horn Interchange, and a new 10-lane Port Mann Bridge with a collector - express lane setup. Its probably the biggest highway project west of Toronto right now (or competing with Calgary's Stoney Trail).

^Well Nova Scotia doesn't quite have that much money to spend on our highways but we do have a new concrete median on our C/E system!

those Grandview HOV flyovers are pretty neat. Is Grandview Street the main road from the #1 into Vancouver?

Cool pics.

There is no one main road; Grandview, Broadway, 1st Ave, Hastings and McGill all act as main E/W arterials from highway 1.

Here is the new cape horn just for some eye candy:

Not just the Bouchard era, but all Quebec Premiers from the 1970s up to him.

^ Good thing they widened or are widening the 417 in the west end...6 thru lanes across just doesn't cut it anymore.Just by default you got a nice angle of downtown at the same time.

It would be impossible to widen it through the city to what is warranted based on traffic demand (about 12 lanes) without enormous expropriation of houses and businesses. It is either alternate routes or alternate modes of transportation.

Well they are widening it ..Just not right through the city...Certain sections in the West end are now complete or still in the bidding process....Roughly where the pic was taken.

The marvel of this project is not the design, but the fact that they are building this on, in and around an existing major highway interchange.

IMO when this project is complete, this section of the #1 from 152nd in Surrey, over the new Port Mann, through the new Cape Horn and the other improved interchanges, then through the Cassiar tunnel and over the 2nd Narrows Bridge will be the most interesting and impressive stretch of highway in Western Canada regarding infrastructure.
