Yup we agreed as much at our last latte meeting, we also decided that all cars and the people that drive them are monsters worse than Stalin.

Seriously, people need to just understand that this thing is getting built. The single sourcing was dumb (but the design is another step in forcing Calgary to step up its game architecturally speaking), the way the city has handled almost everything about it has been royally screwed up, but the fact remains that this bridge will become THE choice for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the river in this area. Its amazing width and dedicated bike/pedestrian lanes ensures that.

What a waste of taxpayers dollars. Nuke it from orbit. Period. I am right and that is it. More roads, less pedestrians.

Like so many other things built in Calgary or other cities, not everything has to be a necessity. If everyone had this mentality, we'd eventually be stripped of anything nice or interesting in a city.

Next thing it's...are parks really a necessity? How about bike paths or rec centers, how about trees or flowers on boulevards?

All a big waste. All we need is roads, houses, walmarts, and offices to make money to feed our families. Everything is is just frivolous fru fru...... (this all being said while eating at the new boxwood cafe in central memorial park)

I've always thought it would be interesting to have some slight autonomy when it comes to communities. Like have a default 'bare bones' infrastructure for each community and the property taxes necessary to pay for them. Then, get each community to vote on a list of 'perks', and any that are approved would be implemented, and charged to the property tax bill for the houses in that community. It would be a curious experiment to see how many stick with the barebones, and of those that do, how long it is before they change their mind as other communities which did go with most of the perks quickly become very desirable places to live.

I couldn't have said this better. esp. RE: single sourcing. Sometimes simple things can be elegant too. Too bad Ikea doesn't make pedestrian bridges. I could really see Calgarians getting behind a Malm "Pess Bjriddg".

Yup, OpenFile Calgary confirms this as well:

Quote:
The unfinished Peace Bridge will be unveiled to the public in the second week in November when crews move it out of its storage shed to span the Bow River, over top of the temporary bridge that is currently in place. Once it is in place, work will begin to install lights and handrails.

From that point I wonder how long it will take them to install railings etc, and complete that pathways up to it.
I think that is the delay in the bridge being able to open this year instead of next, that stuff won't be done until 2012 apparently.

if they have to do pathways leading up to the bridge, it might be 2012. You can't pack frozen soil properly.

I'm no expert, but I still can't see why the 2 years of delays wasn't enough to get the path work done ahead of time....

No sense in doing path work if the bridge isn't going to be installed.

And yes, that was a distinct possibility at one point. Maybe remote, but it was on the table.
