I live right at 104th and 99th - any development through there will need expropriation, even if the walkway to the apartment building south of McKay is not on private land. The amount of space between the condos and McKay is really narrow.

And how is this train going to get all the way down to the river valley floor? Elevated structure right next to condos? NIMBY nightmare!

Aren't funicular railways meant for step consistant islopes? How does one continue the funicular when the slope changes at the top/bottom of the staircase?

Some have a hybrid/dual running system which is very similar to a modern roller-coaster. They ratchet up the hill but ran detach and run horizontal as well. Another good example is a high speed quad chair on a ski hill.

But aren't the cars angled to ensure the floor is flat when on the incline? the car would then be slanted when the slop changes.

Yup, the whole idea is a little 'mickey mouse' if you ask me. Let's direct the money to some real design issues and implementation.

This week, Calgary city council voted to give further consideration to a plan, proposed by right-wing rookie councillor Shane Keating, to sell off the official naming rights to its LRT stations.

As Jason Markusoff of the Calgary Herald joked, Calgary commuters could soon be travelling to stations with names like Suncor-Sunnyside or Olive Garden-Tuscany.

Does it sound like commercialism gone crazy?

Alas, it's cross-country form of mania...

Guide I've read many places are at least double for above ground, and any where from 4 to 10 times for underground regardless of method. Of course, if you have at grade stations, but most of the track underground, you would trim that a bit, but not much.

It also depends on whether you're willing to cut and cover under roads (closing lanes during construction vs cut and covering on a ROW) and what utilities are underneath. (in many cities unless the tunnel has been planned for a lnog time, the most logical place to put sewer and water mains is the same place you want to run your train)

Ya I thought they barely have anything done by Grant but now I see there's been a lot of digging done already wow. Compared to the current rundown look, the whole area between 101 and 105 is going to change so much with this LRT and arena and hopefully Aurora going up. Too bad they can't just destroy those communist looking apartments on the corner of 104 and 105.
