We have quite a lot of empty/parking lots and 1-2 storey non-descript buildings that replaced various quality historic low-rise buildings throughout Toronto too. The dreck that replaced those gems are unacceptable.

It has always amazed me how Bank of Montreal chose to build such a small, anonymous tower for what was its real HQ back in '59. I mean come on, Royal Bank had its 22 storey tower just 4 blocks down!

Hamilton is a sad and tragic place. You should check out the Vanished Hamilton series of books. If I had them I would scan some photos.

It's not til you see these tragic loses that you realize how big and important Hamilton was in it's hey day. It, like Winnipeg, have lost a lot of their relative importance and it's only when you see pics like this you realize the staure that Hamilton once had.
As far as Vancouver, it still has many gems. All cities change and shift but no other city in the country has had such a profound change of the central business/commercial centre of the city than Vancouver. The flight from East Hastings to Granville/Robson in the last 50 years has been incredible.

I have two book about Hamilton. "Celebrating a new Hamilton" which doesn't have any pictures of old Hamilton. But I have one called "The Prints of Time: Old Photographs from the Spectator's Archieves" This one has a lot of buildings in it that don't exist anymore. Can be hard to look at some times.

The only saving grace is because of the neglect of the area over the decades, many of the old building streetscapes remain as almost nothing was built for a long time in the area.

That building is still there, but not the tower.

Regarding the Customs House, could its demolition be related to the 1962 four storey addition done to the Dominion Public Builiding (the art deco building referred to)? I'm wondering if it was taken down to make room then the plans changed... It sure looked like a beautiful building!
