A few examples I can think of:

This is Barrington Street in Halifax, 1915. Everything on the right is gone. What's really sad is that the row of buildings on the far right (with the taller building) were torn down in 1990 or so for an office building that was never built. The site has been a parking lot ever since.

Royal Bank building from the 1870s or so. The bank was originally based in Halifax.

Most buildings on the left are gone (but were replaced with nicer buildings).

Customs House. Not sure why it was torn down in 1955. An art deco highrise went up next door in 1929 or so. I would love to find this view with the two buildings side by side:

The building at the end of the last scene fronted onto Sackville Street at Bedford Row and had a few 4-6 storey neighbours. I've never found a good photo looking up Sackville Street taken when those buildings still existed. Apparently they were torn down in the 1980s or so, because I've seen them in aerial shots. No guarantee that they were in a good state by that time, of course.

Toronto could have its own thread about this.. So much was razed over the years.

A number of them were already mentioned on the first page but here are some others.

The Old Toronto Star building is the most obvious one:

The Ford Hotel was a big loss as well:

edit: a quick search on the internet and I discovered that there were several Ford hotels in the US and Canada and had identical hotels.

^Yep, according to wiki there were Fords in Erie, Rochester, Buffalo, Montreal and Toronto. All were close to identical. The one in Buffalo is also kaput. interesting.

The Ford Hotel, Erie (today an apartment building).

They don't build them like they used to. The old Montreal post office reminds me of Toronto's lost post office, both very grand and beautiful. I love Second-Empire style buildings, probably my favourite of the Victorians variations.

That Hamilton Street (york) now looks like a mississausage boulevard. Goodbye class, hello Mavis.

York boulevard is exactly the type of street I hate the most. Too wide, few buildings, highrises from the 60s-70s without character, buildings are too far from the street, large parks with hideous fences and few trees. It look like the Ottawa suburbs, very depressing compared to what used to be there.

Couldn't agree with you more. York boulevard is an embarrassment. Seeing what they tore down makes me cringe.

Some more examples from Vancouver. While some of these buildings may be on a lesser scale and not as old as posted above, the city was only incorporated in 1886, so to lose this amount of heritage is no good. Having said that, I can't believe some of the loses posted from other cities. Wow.

This building was part of an entire city block that was levelled for a couple of viaducts. It was home to Vancouver's black community at the time and was called Hogan's Alley.
